Pick up horizontal strand between st just worked and next st, place on LH needle, k this strand through front loop

M1LP

Left Mitten
With dpn’s, cast on 32 sts. Divide sts onto 3 needles and join, being careful not to twist sts. Mark for beg of rnd with different colored marker and carry marker up.
Ribbing: Rnd 1: K2, p2, k2, (p1, k1) 3 times, p2, (k1, p1) 3 times, (k2, p2) 3 times. Rep this rnd 11 times more.
Rnd 13: K8, (p1, k1) twice, p1, M1R, p1, (k1, p1) twice, k14 – 33 sts.
Establish Chart: Rnd 14: K3, work Row 1 of chart over 21 sts, k9.
Rnds 15 and 16: K3, continue to follow chart over 21 sts, k9.
Thumb Gusset: Inc Rnd: K1, place marker, M1L, k1, M1R, place marker, k1, continue to follow chart over 21 sts, k9 – 35 sts.
Next Rnd: K1, sl marker, k to next marker, sl marker, K1, continue to follow chart over 21 sts, k9.
Following Rnd: K1, sl marker, M1L, k to next marker, M1R, sl marker, k1, continue to follow chart over 21 sts, k9 – 37 sts. Rep the last 2 rnds 5 times more – 47 sts (15 sts between thumb markers). Rep Next Rnd once more.
Divide for Thumb: Rnd 31: K1, drop marker, sl next 15 sts onto holder for thumb, drop marker, cast on 1 st, k1, follow chart over next 21 sts, k9 – 33 sts.
Work even in pat as established until piece measures 8” from beg (or 1” less than desired length). Discontinue chart and work from here in St st.
Shape Top: Rnd 1: Knit.
Rnd 2: * K1, k2 tog, rep from * around – 22 sts.
Rnd 3: Knit.
Rnd 4: * K2 tog, rep from * around – 11 sts.
Rnd 5: Knit.
Rnd 6: K1, * k2 tog, rep from * around – 6 sts. Break off yarn leaving an 8” long end. Thread end into tapestry needle and draw through all sts on needles. Pull up tightly and secure. Fasten off.
Thumb: Sl 15 sts from holder onto 3 dpn’s. Join yarn and k15, then pick up and k2 sts in cast-on st – 17 sts. Mark for beg of rnd and carry marker up. Knit 8 rnds.
Shape Top: Rnd 1: * K1, k2 tog, rep from * to last 2 sts, end k2 – 12 sts.
Rnd 2: Knit.
Rnd 3: * K2 tog, rep from * around – 6 sts. Finish same as top of mitten.
Right Mitten
With dpn’s, cast on 32 sts. Divide sts onto 3 dpns and join, being careful not to twist sts. Mark for beg of rnd with different colored marker and carry marker up.
Ribbing: Rnd 1: (P2, k2) 3 times, (p1, k1) 3 times, p2, (k1, p1) 3 times, k2, p2, k2. Rep this rnd 11 times more.
Rnd 13: K14, (p1, k1) twice, p1, M1R, p1, (k1, p1) twice, k8 – 33 sts.
Establish Chart: Rnd 14: K9, work Rnd 1 of Chart over 21 sts, k3.
Rnds 15 and 16: K9, continue to follow chart over 21 sts, k3.
Thumb Gusset: Inc Rnd: K9, continue to follow chart over 21 sts, k1, place marker, M1L, k1, M1R, place marker, k1 – 35 sts. Continue to shape thumb gusset working incs same as left mitten until there are 15 sts between markers and a total of 47 sts on needles. Work 1 rnd even.
Divide for Thumb: K9, continue to follow chart over 21 sts, k1, drop marker, sl next 15 sts onto holder for thumb, drop marker, cast on 1 st, k1 – 33 sts. Complete to correspond to left mitten.
