Pattern Stitch (Multiple of 4 sts + 1)

Row 1 (WS):  Purl.

Row 2:  K2tog, * (k1, yo, k1) all in next st, sl 1, k2 tog, psso, rep from * to last 3 sts, end (k1, yo, k1) all in next st, SSK.

Rep these 2 rows for Pat St.

* Working in Pat St, work 2 rows MC, 2 rows A, (2 rows MC, 2 rows B) twice, 2 rows MC, 2 rows A, (2 rows MC, 2 rows C) twice, 2 rows MC, 2 rows D, (2 rows MC, 2 rows C) twice, rep from * once, more, end on RS – 72 rows total.  Bind off.

Mitten (Make 2)

Cuff (Worked back and forth in rows):  With dpn’s, using MC, cast on 33 sts.  DO NOT turn.  Work even in Pat St, following Stripe Sequence until 72 rows have been completed, end on Row 2.  Change to MC and work Row 1.  Bind off knitwise.  Sew cast-on and bound-off edges tog forming a tube. Weave in all ends. Turn tube so that edge where yarns were changed is on the top.  Sts are picked up along this edge for a neater look to outer edge of cuff.

Hand (Worked in the round):  With RS facing, using dpn’s and B, beg at seam, pick up and k60 sts along edge of cuff where yarns were changed.  Mark for beg of rnd with different colored marker and carry marker up.  Divide sts evenly on 3 needles (20 sts per needle).  Knit 1 rnd.  From here, work in St st (k EVERY rnd) with B.

Thumb Gusset:  Next Rnd:  K29, place marker, M1k, k2, M1k, place marker, k29 – 62 sts.  Knit 3 rnds.  Continue to inc 1 st after 1st marker and before 2nd marker in this manner every 4th rnd 8 times more – 78 sts (20 sts between markers).

Divide for Thumb:  Next Rnd:  K to 1st marker, sl the next 20 sts to waste yarn for thumb, dropping markers, cast on 2 sts, k29 – 60 sts.  Work even until hand measures 3/4” less than desired length.

Shape Top:  Dec Rnd 1: * K3, k2 tog, rep from * around – 48 sts.  Knit 3 rnds.

Dec Rnd 2:  * K2, k2 tog, rep from * around – 36 sts.  Knit 3 rnds.

Dec Rnd 3:  * K1, k2 tog, rep from * around – 24 sts.  Knit 3 rnds.

Dec Rnd 4:  * K2 tog, rep from * around – 12 sts.  Break off yarn leaving an 8” long end. Thread end into tapestry needle and draw through all sts on needles.  Pull up tightly and secure.

Thumb:  Sl 20 ts from waste yarn back onto 3 dpn’s and divide sts onto 3 needles.  Join B and k20, pick up and k1 st before cast-on sts, 2 sts across cast-on sts and 1 st after cast-on sts – 24 sts.  Divide sts evenly onto 3 dpns (8 sts per needle).  Mark for beg of rnd and carry marker up.  Work even in St st until thumb measures 1/2” less than desired length.

Dec Rnd:  * K2 tog, rep from * around – 12 sts.   Knit 1 rnd.  Rep Dec Rnd once more – 6 sts.  Break off yarn leaving an 8” long end.  Thread end into tapestry needle and draw through all sts on needles.  Pull up tightly and secure.
