Materials

2(2-2-2-3-3) Hanks Berroco Ultra Alpaca Fine (100 grs), #1277 Peat Mix

Straight knitting needles, size  6 (4.00 mm) OR SIZE TO OBTAIN GAUGE

16” Length circular knitting needle, size 4 (3.50 mm)

Optional:  Ribbon or fabric torn in strips for embroidery

Tapestry needle

1 St marker


Gauge

20 sts = 4”;  30 rows = 4” in St st on larger needles

Back

With straight needles, cast on 80(90-100-110-120-130) sts.  Work even in St st for 1”, end on RS.  Knit 1 row on WS for Garter ridge.  Work even in St st until piece measures 4(4-4½- 4½-5-5)” from beg, end on WS.  Dec 1 st each side of next row, then every 2¼” twice more – 74(84-94-104-114-124) sts.  Work even until piece measures 11½(11½-12-12-12½-12½)” from beg, end on WS.  Inc 1 st each side of next row, then every 1½” twice more – 80(90-100-110-120-130) sts.  Work even until piece measures 15½(15½-16-16-16½-16½)” from beg, end on WS.

Shape Armholes:  Bind off 5(5-6-8-10-10) sts at beg of the next 2 rows – 70(80-88-94-100-110) sts.

Dec Row (RS):  K2, k2 tog, k to last 4 sts, SSK, k2 – 68(78-86-92-98-108) sts.  Rep this dec every RS row 4(9-10-11-11-14) times more – 60(60-66-70-76-80) sts.  Work even until armholes measure 7½(7½-8-8½-8½-9)”, end on WS.

Shape Shoulders:  Bind off 4(4-5-5-6-6) sts at beg of the next 2 rows, then 3(3-4-5-6-7) sts at beg of the next 4 rows.  Bind off remaining 40 sts for back neck.


Front

Work same as back until armholes measure 6½(6½-7-7½-7½-8)”, end on WS – 60(60-66-70-76-80) sts.

Shape Neck:  K14(14-17-19-22-24), join another hank of yarn and bind off center 32 sts, k to end.  Working both sides at once, purl 1 row.

Dec Row (RS):  With first hank, k11(11-14-16-19-21), SSK, k1;  with second hank, k1, k2 tog, k to end.  Rep this dec every RS row 3 times more.  AT THE SAME TIME, when armholes measure 7½(7½-8-8½-8½-9)”, bind off 4(4-5-5-6-6) sts at each armhole edge once, then 3(3-4-5-6-7) sts twice for shoulders.


Sleeves

With straight needles, cast on 60(60-66-70-76-80) sts.  Work even in St st for 1”, end on RS.  Knit 1 row on WS for Garter ridge.  Work even in St st until sleeve measures 2” from beg, end on WS.

Shape Cap:  Bind off 5(5-6-8-10-10) sts at beg of the next 2 rows – 50(50-54-54-56-60) sts.  Work 0(0-2-2-2-2) rows even, end on WS.

Dec Row (RS):  K2, k2 tog, k to last 4 sts, SSK, k2 – 48(48-52-52-54-58) sts.  Rep this dec every 4th row  0(0-0-2-1-2) times more, then every RS row 18(18-17-13-15-13) times, end on WS.  Bind off remaining 12(12-18-22-22-28) sts.


Finishing

Sew shoulder seams.

Neckband:  With RS facing, using circular needle, beg at center back neck, pick up and k124 sts around entire neck edge.  Mark for beg of rnd and carry marker up.  Work even in k1, p1 ribbing for ½”.  Bind off in ribbing.  Sew in sleeves.  Sew side and sleeve seams, reversing seams over 1” below Garter ridges and allowing edges to roll back.

Optional:  Using tapestry needle and either ribbon or narrow strips of fabric, embroider front bodice as shown in photo.  The embroidery we used is strictly free-form.  Work yours in any way that pleases you and have a truly individual sweater.
