Straight knitting needles, sizes 5 (3.75 mm) and 7 (4.50 mm) OR SIZE TO OBTAIN GAUGE

Crochet hook, size 4.00 mm (G-6)

Pattern Stitch (Multiple of 4 sts + 1)

Row 1 (RS):  With A, k1, * sl 1 WYIB, insert needle under running thread between the st just slipped and the next st and knit this thread, sl 1 WYIB, k1, pass first slipped st over the last 3 sts, k1, rep from * across.

Row 2:  With A, purl.

Row 3:  With B, k3, rep from * of Row 1 to last 2 sts, end k2.

Row 4:  With B, purl.

Rep these 4 rows for Pat St.


Back

With smaller needles, using MC, cast on 94(106-118-130-142-154) sts.

Ribbing:  Row 1 (RS):  K2, * p2, k2, rep from * across.

Row 2:  P2, * k2, p2, rep from * across.  Rep these 2 rows until piece measures 3” from beg, end on RS.  Change to larger needles and p the next row, dec 5(5-5-9-9-11) sts across – 89(101-113-121-133-143) sts.  Join CC and work even in Pat St until piece measures 4” from beg, end on WS.  Dec 1 st each end of next row, then every 1¼(1¼-1½-1¾-2-2¼)” twice more – 83(95-107-115-127-137) sts.  Work even until piece measures 8½(8½-9-9½-10-10½)” from beg, end on WS.  Inc 1 st each end of next row, then every 1½” twice more – 89(101-113-121-133-143) sts.  Work even until piece measures 12½(12½-13-13½-14-14½)” from beg, end on WS.

Shape Armholes:  Bind off 4(5-5-6-6-7) sts at beg of the next 2 rows, 3(4-4-5-5-6) sts at beg of the next 2 rows, then 2 sts at beg of the next 2 rows – 71(79-91-95-107-113) sts.  Dec 1 st each side every RS row 2(4-7-6-10-10) times – 67(71-77-83-87-93) sts.  Work even until armholes measure 7½(7½-8-8½-8½-9)”, end on WS.

Shape Shoulders:  Bind off 5(7-8-9-9-10) sts at beg of the next 2 rows, then 6(6-7-8-9-10) sts at beg of the next 4 rows.  Bind off remaining 33 sts for back neck.


Pocket Linings (Make 2)

With larger needles, using CC, cast on 16(16-18-18-20-20) sts.  Work even in St st for 2½(2½-3-3½-4 -4½)”, end on RS, inc 3(3-4-4-4-4) sts across last row – 19(19-22-22-24-24) sts.  Sl remaining sts onto holder.


Left Front

With smaller needles, using MC, cast on 34(42-46-54-58-66) sts.  Work in ribbing same as back for 3”, end on RS.  Change to larger needles and p the next row, dec 1(5-1-5-5-5) sts across – 33(37-45-49-53-61) sts.  Join CC and work even in Pat St until piece measures 4” from beg, end on WS.  Dec 1 st at beg of the next row, then at same edge every 1¼(1¼-1½-1¾-2-2½)” twice more.  AT THE SAME TIME, when piece measures 5½(5½-6-6½-7-7½)” from beg, end on WS.

Insert Pocket Lining:  Next Row (RS):  Work 3 sts, bind off 19(19-22-22-24-24) sts, work to end.

Following Row:  P to bound-off sts, p19(19-22-22-24-24) sts from holder, p to end.  Continue to work decs at beg of rows as before – 30(34-42-46-50-58) sts.  Work even until piece measures 8½(8½-9-9½-10-10½)” from beg, end on WS.   Inc 1 st at beg of the next row, then at same edge every 1½” twice more – 33(37-45-49-53-61) sts.  Work even until piece measures 12½(12½-13-13½-14-14½)” from beg, end on WS.

Shape Armhole:  Bind off 4(5-5-6-6-7) sts at beg of the next RS row, 3(4-4-5-5-6) sts at beg of the next RS row, then 2 sts at beg of the next RS row – 24(26-34-36-40-46) sts.  Dec 1 st at same edge every RS row 2(4-7-6-10-10) times – 22(22-27-30-30-36) sts.  Work even until armhole measures 5(5-5½-6-6-6½)”, end on RS.

Shape Neck:  Bind off 2 sts, p to end – 20(20-25-28-28-34) sts.  Dec 1 st at neck edge every RS row 3(1-3-3-1-4) times – 17(19-22-25-27-30) sts.  Work even until armhole measures 7½(7½-8-8½-8½-9)”, end on WS.  Bind off 5(7-8-9-9-10) sts at armhole edge once, then 6(6-7-8-9-10) sts twice.


Right Front

Work to correspond to left front, reversing all shaping.  Work side decs and incs at end of RS rows.  When inserting pocket lining, work to last 22(22-25-25-27-27) sts, bind off 19(19-22-22-24-24) sts, then work to end.  On following row, p3, p19(19-22-22-24-24) sts from holder, then p to end.  Bind off for armhole on WS rows.  Work armhole decs at end of RS rows.  Bind off for neck on RS row.  Work neck decs at beg of RS rows.  Bind off for shoulder on WS rows.


Sleeves

With smaller needles, using MC, cast on 50 sts.  Work in ribbing same as back for 2½”, end on RS.  Change to larger needles and p the next row, dec 5 sts across – 45 sts.  Join CC and work in Pat St, inc 1 st each side every 1¼(1¼-1 -¾-¾-½)” 10(10-13-16-19-21) times, working incs into Pat St as sts become available – 65(65-71-77-83-87) sts.  Work even until sleeve measures 18” from beg, end on WS.

Shape Cap:  Bind off 4(5-5-6-6-7) sts at beg of the next 2 rows, then 3(4-4-5-5-6) sts at beg of the next 2 rows – 51(47-53-55-61-61) sts.  Dec 1 st each side every 4th row 1(3-2-3-0-1) times, then every RS row 15(11-15-13-19-18) times – 19(19-19-23-23-23) sts.  Bind off 2 sts at beg of the next 2 rows.  Bind off remaining 15(15-15-19-19-19) sts.


Finishing

Left Frontband:  With RS facing, using smaller needles and CC, beg at neck edge, pick up and k93(93-97-101-105-109) sts.

Row 1 (WS):  K1, * p1, k1, rep from * across.  Rep this row until frontband measures 4½”, end on WS.  Bind off.

Right Frontband:  Beg at lower edge, work same as left frontband for 1½”, end on WS.

Buttonhole Row (RS):  Work 35 sts, bind off 2 sts, work until there are 18 sts on RH needle after bound-off sts, bind off 2 sts, work to end.

Following Row:  Work in Seed St as established, cast on 2 sts over each pair of sts bound off on previous row.  Work even until frontband measures 3” from beg.  Rep Buttonhole Row and Following Row once more.  Work even until frontband measures 4½” from beg, end on WS.  Bind off.

Pocket Edgings:  With RS facing, using larger needles and CC, pick up and k 1 st in each bound-off st of pocket.  Knit 1 row.  Bind off with MC.  Sew cast on edges of pocket linings to top of ribbing.  Sew side edges of pockets in place.  Sew shoulder seams.  Sew in sleeves.  Sew side and sleeve seams.

Collar:  With larger needles, using MC, cast on 97 sts.  Purl 1 row.  Join CC and work even in Pat St until collar measures 4” from beg, end on WS.  Bind off.  Sew cast-on edge of collar to neck edge, with ends of collar extending 1” across ends of frontbands so that collar folds back to RS.

Collar Edging:  With RS facing, using crochet hook and CC, work 1 row sc around all 3 free edges of collar.  Sew on buttons.
