9(10-12-13-14-16) Hanks Berroco Lago (50 grs), #8415 Sandcastle
Straight knitting needles, size 7 (4.50 mm) OR SIZE TO OBTAIN GAUGE
29" and 24" Length circular knitting needles, size 7 (4.50 mm)

Note
This sweater has an unusual construction. Wedge-shaped shoulder/sleeve pieces are made first. Then you pick up sts along the edges of those pieces and work downward for the front or back and remainder of sleeves. Finally, you apply the Garter St band at lower edge, knitting it on as you go.
Shoulder Wedges (Make 2)
With straight needles, cast on 12 sts. Work even in St st for 1", end on WS.
Inc Row (RS): K1, M1k, k to last st, M1k, k1 - 14 sts. Rep this inc every ¾(¾-1- 1- 1- 1)" 14 times more - 42 sts. Work even until piece measures 13(14-15-16-17-18)" from beg, end on WS. Mark beg and end of last row for beg of neck.
Shape Neck: Next Row (RS): K17, join another hank of yarn and bind off center 8 sts, k to end. Working both sides at once, bind off 3 sts at each neck edge once, then 2 sts twice, end on WS - 10 sts each side.
Dec Row (RS): With first hank, k to 4 sts from neck edge, k2 tog, k2; with second hank, k2, SSK, k to end - 9 sts each side. Rep this dec every RS row 7 times more - 2 sts each side. Work even until piece measures 4" from neck markers, end on WS. Bind off.
Back
With RS facing, using longer circular needle, beg at cast-on edge of shoulder wedge, pick up and k85(90-95-100-105-110) sts along right side of first wedge, cast on 19 sts using knit-on method, then beg at bound-off edge of second wedge, pick up and k85(90-95-100-105-110) sts along left side of second edge to cast-on edge. - 189(199-209-219-229-239) sts. Work even in Garter St until piece measures 6" from picked-up sts, end on WS. Note: When measuring, hold piece up in the air and measure - this is how the piece will be when it's worn.
Change to St st. Bind off 40 sts at beg if the next 2 rows for sleeves - 109(119-129-139-149-159) sts.
Dec Row (RS): K1, k2 tog, k to last 3 sts, SSK, k1 - 107(117-127-137-147-157) sts. Rep this dec every RS row 9(9-7-5-5-3) times more, then every 4th row 0(0-2-4-4-6) times - 89(99-109-119-129-139) sts. Mark beg and end of last row. Work even until piece measures 7(7-7½-7½-8-8)" above markers, end on WS.
Garter Border: Using yarn still attached to back, cast on 25 sts (using knit-on method) and work as follows:
Row 1: K24, SSK, turn.
Row 2 and all WS rows: Knit - 25 sts.
Row 3: K24, SSK, turn.
Row 5: K24, SSSK, turn.
Row 6: Rep Row 2. Rep these 6 rows until all 89(99-109-119-129-139) sts of back have been used up - 25 sts remain. Bind off.
Front
Work same as back, picking up sts along the opposite side edges of shoulder wedges.
Finishing
Sew sleeve, underarm and side seams, leaving 5" of Garter Border open each side for side vents.
Neck Edging: With RS facing, using shorter circular needle, beg at shoulder edge, pick up and k130 sts around entire neck edge. Mark for beg of rnd and carry marker up. Purl 2 rnds. Bind off purlwise.
