Back
With smaller straight needles, cast on 98(108-118-128-138-148) sts.
Row 1 (RS): K3, * p2, k3, rep from * across.
Row 2: P3, * k2, p3, rep from * across. Rep these 2 rows until piece measures 2 1/2” from beg, end on RS. Change to larger straight needles and p the next row decreasing 11 sts evenly spaced across – 87(97-107-117-127-137) sts. Work even in St st until piece measures 11” from beg, end on WS. Change to larger circular needle.
Shape Back of Sleeves: Cast on 7(6-5-5-4-4) sts at beg of the next 20(14-16-16-10-10) rows, then 0(7-6-6-5-5) sts at beg of the next 0(8-10-10-20-20) rows, end on WS – 227(237-247-257-267-277) sts. Cast on 5 sts at beg of the next 2 rows – 237(247-257-267-277-287) sts. Work even in St st until piece measures 2 1/2(2 1/2-3-3-3 1/2-3 1/2)” from last group of cast-on sts, end on WS.
Shape Neck: Next Row (RS): K105(110-115-120-125-130), join another hank of yarn and bind off center 27 sts, k to end. Working both sides at once, bind off 4 sts at each neck edge once, 3 sts once, 2 sts twice, then dec 1 st at each neck edge once – 93(98-103-108-113-118) sts each side. Leave all sts on circular needle for joining.
Left Front
With smaller straight needles, cast on 68(73-78-83-88-93) sts. Work in ribbing same as for back for 2 1/2”, end on RS. Change to larger straight needles and p the next row decreasing 8 sts evenly spaced across – 60(65-70-75-80-85) sts. Work even in St st until piece measures 8 1/2(9-9 1/2-10-10 1/2-11)” from beg, end on RS.
Note: Please read through this entire section before starting to knit.
Shape Neck: Next Row (WS): Bind off 5 sts, p to end – 55(60-65-70-75-80) sts. Bind off 4 sts at beg of the next 2 WS rows, 3 sts at beg of the next 2 WS row, then 2 sts at beg of the next 6 WS rows, end on WS.
Dec Row (RS): K to last 5 sts, SSK, k3. Rep this dec every RS row 6 times more, then every other RS row 4 times. AT THE SAME TIME, when piece measures 11” from beg, cast on 7(6-5-5-4-4) sts at beg of the next 10(7-8-8-5-5) RS rows, then 0(7-6-6-5-5) sts at beg of the next 0(4-5-5-10-10) RS rows, then 5 sts at beg of the next RS row for left front sleeve. When all neck decs and sleeve cast-ons have been completed, work even on 93(98-103-108-113-118) sts until piece measures 4(4-4 1/2-4 1/2-5-5)” from last group of cast-on sts, end on WS. Sl sts onto st holders or a spare knitting needle for joining.
Right Front
Work to correspond to left front, reversing all shaping. Bind off for neck at beg of RS rows instead of WS. Work neck decs as k3, k2 tog. Cast on for right front sleeve at beg of WS rows. Leave sts on circular needle for joining.
Finishing
Sl sts of left front onto circular needle before sts of right front. Hold WS of left front sleeve and left back sleeve tog so that sts on the circular needles are parallel with each other. Using single straight needle, knit 1st st of left front sleeve and left back sleeve tog. Repeat for 2nd st of left front sleeve and left back sleeve. Bind off this st. In this manner, continue to knit all the sts of the left front sleeve and left back sleeve tog, binding off as you work. (This is known as a three-needle bind off and will leave a decorative welt on the RS of work.) Repeat for right front sleeve and right back sleeve. Steam piece with hot steam iron and a pressing cloth.
Neckband: With RS facing, using smaller circular needle, beg at right front edge, pick up and k68 sts along right front neck edge, 57 sts across back neck edge, then 68 sts along left front neck edge – 193 sts.
Row 1 (WS): P3, * k2, p3, rep from * across.
Row 2: K3, * p2, k3, rep from * across. Rep these 2 rows for 2”, end on WS.
Next Row (RS): K1, * p1, k1, rep from * across.
Following Row: P1, * k1, p1, rep from * across. Rep these 2 rows until neckband measures 3” from beg, end on WS. Bind off all sts in ribbing.
Cuffs: With RS facing, using smaller straight needles, pick up and k43(43-46-46-48-48) sts along sleeve edge.
Row 1 (WS): P3(3-2-2-3-3), * k2, p3, rep from * across, end last rep p3(3-2-2-3-3) instead of p3.
Row 2: K3(3-2-2-3-3), * p2, k3, rep from * across, end last rep k3(3-2-2-3-3) instead of k3. Rep these 2 rows until cuff measures 3”, end on WS. Bind off all sts in ribbing. Sew side, sleeve and sleeve cuff seams.
Buttonloop: With RS facing, using crochet hook, join yarn in right front edge of neckband 1” up from beg. Make a chain desired length to fit around button. Join ch in right front edge of neckband with a sl st 1” down from end. Fasten off. Sew button to left front opposite buttonloop. Note: Snaps may be sewn to WS of right front and RS of left front for closure instead of button and buttonloop if desired.
