Materials

Berroco Ultra Alpaca (100 grs), 9(12) hanks #6201.

Two 29” length circular knitting needles, size 8 OR SIZE TO OBTAIN GAUGE.

One 29” length circular knitting needle, size 6.

One straight knitting needle, size 8 for joining.

1 St marker.

Gauge

20 sts = 4”;  26 rows = 4” in St st on size 8 needles.

Note

Shrug is made sideways in 2 pieces, then knit together in the center.  Left side is worked from left cuff to center bust.  Right side is worked from right cuff to center bust.  The sleeves are included in each side.  There is not opening for neck – you slip your arms into the sleeves with the entire piece behind your back.  Front edges of shrug are not intended to meet (see photo).

Lace Pattern (Multiple of 12 + 1)

Row 1 (RS):  * K1, yo, k4, sl 1, k2 tog, psso, k4, yo, rep from * across, end k1.

Row 2 and all WS rows:  Purl.

Row 3:  * K2, yo, k3, sl 1, k2 tog, psso, k3, yo, k1, rep from * across, end last rep k2 instead of k1.

Row 5:  * K3, yo, k2, sl 1, k2 tog, psso, k2, yo, k2, rep from * across, end last rep k3 instead of k2.

Row 7:  * K4, yo, k1, sl 1, k2 tog, psso, k1, yo, k3, rep from * across, end last rep k4 instead of k3.

Row 9:  * K5, yo, sl 1, k2 tog, psso, yo, k4, rep from * across, end last rep k5 instead of k4.

Row 10:  Purl.

Rep these 10 rows for Lace Pat.

Left Side

With larger circular needle, cast on 181(205) sts.  DO NOT join.  Knit 16 rows (8 Garter St ridges), end on WS.  Work in Lace Pat until 6(7) reps have been completed [60(70)] rows, end on WS.  Work even in St st until piece measures 14” from beg, end on WS.  Mark beg and end of last row for end of sleeve.  Work even in St st until piece measures 25(27)” from beg, end on RS.  Knit 16 rows, end on RS.  Purl 1 row, knit 1 row, purl 1 row, end on WS.  Leave all sts on needle for joining.

Right Side

With 2nd larger circular needle, work same as for left side.

Finishing

Place WS of left and right sides tog so that sts on the circular needles are parallel with each other.  Join yarn and using single straight needle, knit 1st st of left side and 1st st of right side tog.  Repeat for 2nd st of left and right sides.  Bind off this st.  In this manner, continue to knit all the sts of the 2 sides tog, binding off as you work.  (This is known as a three-needle bind off and will leave a decorative welt on the RS of work.)  Fold piece in half widthwise and sew edges of left side tog from cast-on edge to markers.  Repeat on right side.

Ribbing:  With smaller circular needle, beg at seam, pick up and k292(336) sts evenly spaced around opening between sleeves.  Mark for beg of rnd and carry marker up.  Work in k1, p1 ribbing for 1 1/4”.  Bind off all sts in ribbing.
