2 Hanks Vintage (100 grs), #5134 Sour cherry
Straight knitting needles, size 8 (5.00 mm) OR SIZE TO OBTAIN GAUGE
16” Length circular knitting needle, size 8 (5.00 mm)
1 Set (4) double pointed knitting needles, size 8 (5.00 mm)

Stocking
With straight needles, cast on 94 sts.
Row 1 (RS): K2, * p2, k2, rep from * across.
Row 2: P2, * k2, p2, rep from * across. Rep these 2 rows until piece measures 1½” from beg, end on WS. Knit the next row, dec 6 sts across – 88 sts.
Establish Chart: Row 1 (WS): P62, place marker, work Row 1 of chart over 26 sts.
Row 2: Work Row 2 of chart to marker, k to end. Work even in pat as established until 2 repeats of chart have been completed (56 rows), then work even until Row 5 of chart has been completed, end on WS. (Piece should measure approximately 11½” from beg and you should made have 5 buttonholes.)
Next Row (RS): Bind off 22 sts, drop marker and k to end – 66 sts. Divide sts evenly onto 3 dpn’s (22 sts per needle) and join. Mark for beg of rnd and carry marker up. Work even in St st (k EVERY rnd) for 2”.
Divide for Heel: K34 and sl these sts onto holder; with straight needle, k remaining 32 sts. Turn and, beg with a p row, work back and forth in St st on these 32 sts until heel measures 3½”, end on RS.
Turn Heel (Short Rows): Row 1 (WS): P17, p2 tog, p2, turn.
Row 2: Sl 1, k3, SSK, k1, turn.
Row 3: Sl 1, p4, p2 tog, p1, turn.
Row 4: Sl 1, k5, SSK, k1, turn.
Row 5: Sl 1, p6, p2 tog, p1, turn.
Row 6: Sl 1, k7, SSK, k1, turn.
Row 7: Sl 1, p8, p2 tog, p1, turn.
Row 8: Sl 1, k9, SSK, k1, turn.
Row 9: Sl 1, p10, p2 tog, p1, turn.
Row 10: Sl 1, k11, SSK, k1, turn.
Row 11: Sl 1, p12, p2 tog, p1, turn.
Row 12: Sl 1, k13, SSK, k1, turn.
Row 13: Sl 1, p14, p2 tog, p1, turn.
Row 14: Sl 1, k15, SSK, k1 – 18 sts.
Heel Gusset: Sl the last 9 sts worked onto circular needle; pick up and k10 sts along left side of heel, place marker, k34 sts from holder, place marker, pick up and k10 sts along right side of heel, k9 – 72 sts. Divide sts onto 3 dpn’s with 20 sts on first and third needles and 32 sts on second (center) needle; mark for beg of rnd with different colored marker and carry all markers up.
Dec Rnd: K to 2 sts before first marker, k2 tog, sl marker, k to next marker, sl marker, SSK, k to end – 70 sts. Knit 1 rnd. Rep these 2 rnds 3 times more – 64 sts.
Foot: Drop the 2 markers at decs and work even in St st until piece measures 6½” above last dec rnd.
Shape Toe: Dec Rnd: On first needle, k14, k2 tog; on second needle, SSK, k28, k2 tog; on third needle, SSK, k to end – 60 sts. Knit 1 rnd. Continue to dec 4 sts in this manner every other rnd 7 times more – 32 sts. Sl 8 sts from third needle onto first needle so that there are 16 sts on each of 2 needles. Break off yarn leaving a 16” long end. Thread end into tapestry needle and, holding the 2 needles parallel, weave toe sts tog using Kitchener St. Optional: Toe may be joined using a 3-needle bind-off.
Finishing
Lap charted section of stocking leg over St st and mark placement of 5 buttons. Sew on buttons.
Hanging Loop: With straight needles, cast on 28 sts. Work even in Reverse St st for 1”, end on WS. Bind off. Fold loop in half widthwise with RS tog and sew bound-off edge to cast-on edge forming tube. Fold loop in half with ends tog and sew both ends to top of stocking working through double thickness of charted section and St st section.
