Materials

11(11-13-14-15) hanks Berroco Ultra Alpaca (100 grs), #5984 Prune Mix

Straight knitting needles, size 8 OR SIZE TO OBTAIN GAUGE

Seven 1” buttons

20 sts = 4”;  32 rows = 4” in Seed St on size 8 needles

Seed Stitch (On an even number of sts)

Row 1 (RS):  * K1, p1, rep from * across.

Row 2:  * P1, k1, rep from * across.

Rep these 2 rows for Seed St.

 

Back

With straight needles, cast on 90(100-110-120-130) sts.  Work even in Seed St until piece measures 31(30 1/2-30-29 1/2-29)” from beg, end on WS.

Shape Armholes:  Bind off 3 sts at beg of the next 2 rows, then 2 sts at beg of the next 4 rows.  Dec 1 st at each side 3 times – 70(80-90-100-110) sts.  Work even until armholes measure 7 1/2(8-8 1/2-9-9 1/2)”, end on WS.

Shape Shoulders:  Bind off 4(5-5-5-6) sts at beg of the next 2 rows, 4(4-5-6-6) sts at beg of the next 2 rows, then 3(4-5-6-7) sts at beg of the next 8 rows, end on WS.  Bind off remaining 30 sts for back neck.

 

Left Front

With straight needles, cast on 50(54-60-64-70) sts.

Row 1 (RS):  K1, work in Seed St to last 3 sts, k3.

Row 2:  Sl 3 with yarn in back, work in Seed St to last st, p1.  Rep these 2 rows until piece measures 8 1/2(8-7 1/2-7-6 1/2)” from beg, end on WS.

Buttonhole Row (RS):  Work to last 5 sts, bind off 2 sts, work to end.

Next Row:  Work in pat as established, cast on 2 sts over sts bound off on previous row.  Work even until piece measures 31(30 1/2-30-20 1/2-29)” from beg, making 4 more buttonholes 4 1/2” apart, end on WS.

Shape Armhole:  Next Row (RS):  Bind off 3 sts, work to last 5 sts, bind off 2 sts, work to end.  Work Next Row of buttonhole, end on WS.  Bind off 2 sts at beg of the next 2 RS rows, then dec 1 st at beg of the next 3 RS rows – 40(44-50-54-60) sts.  Work even in pat as established until armhole measures 7 1/2(8-8 1/2-9-9 1/2)”, making 1 more buttonhole 4 1/2” after last, end on WS.

Shape Shoulder:  Bind off 4(5-5-5-6) sts at armhole edge once, 4(4-5-6-6) sts once, then 3(4-5-6-7) sts 4 times – 20(19-20-19-20) sts.  Work even in pat as established for 3” for collar extension, end on WS.  Bind off.

 

Right Front

With straight needles, cast on 50(54-60-64-70) sts.

Row 1 (RS):  Sl 3 with yarn in back, * k1, p1, rep from * to last st, k1.

Row 2:  P1, * p1, k1, rep from * to last 3 sts, p3.  Work even in pat as established until piece measures 8 1/2(8-7 1/2-7-6 1/2)” from beg, end on WS.

Buttonhole Row (RS):  Work 5 sts, bind off 2 sts, work to end.

Next Row:  Work in pat as established, cast on 2 sts over sts bound off on previous row.  Complete to correspond to left front, reversing all shaping and working 6 more buttonholes opposite those on left front.  Bind off for armhole and shoulder on WS rows.  Work armhole decs at end of RS rows.

 

Sleeves

With straight needles, cast on 50 sts.  Work even in Seed St for 1”, end on WS.  Inc 1 st each side on next row, then every 4(2 1/4-1 3/4-1 1/4-1)” 4(7-9-12-14) times more, working incs into Seed St as sts become available – 60(66-70-76-80) sts.  Work even until sleeve measures 18” from beg, end on WS.

Shape Cap:  Bind off 3 sts at beg of the next 2 rows, then 2 sts at beg of the next 4 rows – 46(52-56-62-66) sts.  Dec 1 st at each side every RS row 8(10-10-10-10) times, then every other RS row 2(1-1-1-1) times, end on WS – 26(30-34-40-44) sts.  Bind off 3 sts at beg of the next 2 rows, then 2 sts at beg of the next 2 rows, end on WS.  Bind off remaining 16(20-24-30-34) sts.

 

Finishing

Sew shoulder seams.  Sew  bound-off edges of collar extensions tog, then sew inner edges of collar extensions to back neck with seam at center.  Sew in sleeves.  Sew side and sleeve seams.

Note:  Buttonband is worked as a separate piece onto which the buttons are sewn, then buttoned through both fronts.

Buttonband:  With straight needles, cast on 12 sts.  Work even in k1, p1 ribbing for 26”.  Bind off.  Pin band to WS of left front edge so that it covers all buttonholes.  Mark placement of buttons.  Remove band and on buttons at markers.  Fasten buttons through buttonholes on left front, then through those on right front.
