Back

With smaller straight needles, cast on 89(99-109-121-131-143) sts.

Ribbing:  Row 1 (RS):  K1, * p1, k1, rep from * across.

Row 2:  P1, * k1, p1, rep from * across.  Rep these 2 rows once more, end on WS, dec 21(21-23-27-29-31) sts across last row – 68(78-86-94-102-112) sts.  Change to larger needles and work even in St st until piece measures 2(2-2½-2½-3-3)” from beg, end on WS.  Dec 1 st each end of next row, then every 1” 3 times – 60-70-78-86-94-104) sts.  Work even until piece measures 8½(8½-9½-9½)” from beg, end on WS.  Inc 1 st each end of next row, then every 3/4" 3 times more – 68(78-86-94-102-112) sts.  Work even until piece measures 12½(12½-13-13-13½-13½)” from beg, end on WS.

Shape Armholes:  Bind off 5(5-6-8-9-9) sts at beg of the next 2 rows – 58(68-74-78-84-94) sts.  Dec 1 st each side every RS row 3(8-9-9-10-13) times – 52(52-56-60-64-68) sts.  Work even until armholes measure 7½(7½-8-8½-9-9½)”, end on WS.

Shape Shoulders:  Bind off 4(4-3-5-4-6) sts at beg of the next 2 rows, then 3(3-4-4-5-5) sts at beg of the next 6 rows.  Bind off remaining 26 sts for back neck.


Left Front

With smaller straight needles, cast on 65(71-77-83-87-93) sts.  Work in ribbing same as back for 4 rows, end on WS, dec 13(15-17-19-19-19) sts across last row – 52(56-60-64-68-74) sts.  Change to larger needles and work even in St st until piece measures 2(2-2½-2½-3-3)” from beg, end on WS.  Dec 1 st at beg of the next row, then at same edge every 1” 3 times – 48(52-56-60-64-70) sts.  Work even until piece measures 8½(8½-9-9-9½-9½)” from beg, end on WS.  Inc 1 st at beg of the next row, k to end – 49(53-57-61-65-71) sts.  Continue to inc 1 st at same edge every ¾" 3 times more.  AT THE SAME TIME, when piece measures 9(9-10-10½-11½-12)” from beg, end on RS, then shape neck as follows:

Shape Neck:  Next Row (WS):  Bind off 4(3-3-3-3-4) sts, p to end.  Continuing to work incs at side edge, bind off 2 sts at neck edge once more, then dec 1 st at neck edge every RS row 25 times.  AT THE SAME TIME, when piece measures 12½(12½-13-13-13½-13½)” from beg (before all neck decs have been completed), shape armhole same as back.  When all neck and armhole decs have been completed, work even on 13(13-15-17-19-21) sts until armholes measure 7½(7½-8-8½-9-9½)”, end on WS.  Bind off 4(4-3-5-4-6) sts at armhole edge once, then 3(3-4-4-5-5) sts 3 times for shoulder.


Right Front

Work to correspond to left front, reversing all shaping.  Work decs and incs on body at end of RS rows.  Bind off for neck on RS rows.  Work neck decs at beg of RS rows.  Bind off for armhole on WS row.  Work armhole decs at end of RS rows.  Bind off for shoulder on WS rows.


Sleeves

With smaller straight needles, cast on 55(55-61-65-71-77) sts.  Work in ribbing same as back for 1”, end on WS, dec 12(12-14-14-16-17) sts across last row – 43(43-47-51-55-60) sts.  Change to larger needles and work in St st, inc 1 st each side every ½" 4(6-6-6-6-6) times – 51(55-59-63-67-72) sts.  Work even if necessary until sleeve measures 4” from beg, end on WS.

Shape Cap:  Bind off 5(5-6-8-9-9) sts at beg of the next 2 rows – 41(45-47-47-49-54) sts.  Dec 1 st each side every 4th row 1(0-0-2-3-2) times, then every RS row 11(13-13-9-7-9) times, end on WS – 17(19-21-25-29-32) sts.  Bind off 2(3-2-2-2-2) sts at beg of the next 2 rows.  Bind off remaining 13(13-17-21-25-28) sts.


Finishing

Collar:  With circular needle, cast on 261 sts.  DO NOT join.  Work in ribbing same as back for 4 rows.  Bind off 4 sts at beg of the next 10 rows, 6 sts at beg of the next 4 rows, 8 sts at beg of the next 12 rows, then 10 sts at beg of the next 4 rows.  Bind off remaining 61 sts.   Sew shoulder seams.  Sew bound-off edge of collar to neck edge from bound-off sts on right front around back neck to bound-off sts of left front.  Sew in sleeves.  Sew side and sleeve seams.
