A simple Softwist scarf is gathered with i-cords in contrasting shades to create eyecatching pleated edges.

Approximately 7” wide x 48” long


Materials

4 Hanks Berroco Softwist (50 grs), #9484 Cocoa and 1 hank each #9472 Walnut and #9439 Ginger

Straight knitting needles, size 8 OR SIZE TO OBTAIN GAUGE

2 Double pointed knitting needles (dpn), size 8

1 Safety pin


Gauge

21 sts = 4”;  22 rows = 4” in Pat St on size 8 needles

TO  SAVE TIME, TAKE TIME TO CHECK GAUGE


Pattern Stitch (Worked over 36 sts)

Rows 1, 3 and 5 (RS):  P12, k12, p12.

Rows 2, 4 and 6:  Knit.

Rows 7, 9 and 11 (RS):  Knit.

Rows 8, 10 and 12:  P12, k12, p12.

Rep these 12 rows for Pat St.


Scarf

With straight needles, using Cocoa, cast on 36 sts.  Work even in Pat St until piece measures 48” from beg, end on WS.  Bind off.


Finishing

I-Cords (Make 1 with Walnut, 1 with Ginger):  With dpn’s, using Walnut or Ginger, cast on 3 sts.

Row 1:  * K3, do not turn work.  Slide sts to beg of needle to work next row from RS.  Rep from * until cord measures 60” long.  Fasten off.  Fasten safety pin in end of cord and weave cord in and out along one side of scarf at inner edge of ruffle.  Repeat with second cord at inner edge of the other ruffle.  Knot the ends of both cords.
