Straight knitting needles, sizes 6 and 8 OR SIZE TO OBTAIN GAUGE.

Crochet hook, size 4.50 mm (G).

Cable Needle (cn).

6 -1/2" JHB buttons #93249.

2 St Markers.


Gauge

11 sts = 2"; 31 rows = 4" in St st with size 8 needles.

Inc 1R

K2, sl next st to cn and hold in FRONT, k1, then k in front and back of st on cn, k2 (inc 1).

Inc 1L

Sl next st to cn and hold in BACK, k1, k in front and back of st on cn, k2 (inc 1).

Dec 1R

K2, sl next 2 sts to cn and hold in BACK, k1, k2 tog from cn (dec 1).

Dec 1L

Sl next st to cn and hold in FRONT, k2 tog TBL, k st from cn (dec 1).


Back

With smaller needles, cast on 2 sts, * cast on 2 sts, pass the first over the second, rep from * 42(46-50-54-58) times, cast on 2 – 46(50-54-58-62) sts on needle.

Next Row: K1, (k1, yo) 43(47-51-55-59) times, k2 – 89(97-105-113-121) sts. P 1 row. Change to larger needles and, beg with a k row, work even in St st for 6", end on WS.

Next Row (RS): Inc 1R, work to last 4 sts, Inc 1L – 91(99-107-115-123) sts. Rep this inc every 6th row 4 times more – 99(107-115-123-131) sts. Work even until piece measures 11" from beg, end on WS.

Shape Armholes: Bind off 4 sts at beg of the next 2 rows.

Next Row (RS): Dec 1R, work to last 5 sts, Dec 1L. Rep this dec every RS row 3 times more – 83(91-99-107-115) sts. Work even until armholes measure 7(7-1/2-8-8-1/2-9)", end on WS.

Shape Neck: Work 24(28-32-34-38) sts, join another hank of yarn and bind off center 35(35-35-39-39) sts, work to end. Working both sides at once, dec 1 st at each neck edge every RS row once. When armholes measure 7-1/2(8-8-1/2-9-9-1/2)", end on WS. Bind off 23(27-31-33-37) sts each side for shoulders.


Left Front

With smaller needles, cast on 2 sts, * cast on 2 sts, pass the first over the second, rep from * 38(41-44-46-49) times, cast on 2 – 42(45-48-50-53) sts on needle.

Next Row: K1, (k1, yo) 39(42-45-47-50) times, k2 – 81(87-93-97-103) sts. P 1 row. Change to larger needles.

Row 1 ( RS): K to last 3 sts, SSK, yo, k1.

Row 2: Purl. Rep these 2 rows for 3", end on WS.

Dec Row (RS): K to last 4 sts, k3 tog TBL, yo, k1. Rep this dec every RS row until piece measures 6", end on WS.

Next Row (RS): Inc 1R, work to last 4 sts, k3 tog TBL, yo, k1. Continuing to dec 1 st at neck edge every RS row, inc in this manner every 6th row 4 times more. Discontinue incs and continue to work decs until piece measures 11" from beg, end on WS – 56(62-68-72-78) sts.

Shape Armhole: Bind off 4 sts, k to last 4 sts, work neck dec. P 1 row.

Next Row (RS): Dec 1R, k to last 4 sts, work neck dec. P 1 row. Rep these 2 rows 3 times more. Continue to work neck decs every RS row until 23(27-31-33-37) sts remain, then work even, working 3 sts at neck edge as SSK, yo, k1, until armhole measures 7-1/2(8-8-1/2-9-9-1/2)", end on WS. Bind off all sts for shoulder.


Right Front

Work same as for left front until there are 81(87-93-97-103) sts on needle. P 1 row. Change to larger needles.

Row 1 (RS): K1, yo, k2 tog, k to end.

Row 2: Purl. Rep these 2 rows for 3", end on WS.

Dec Row: K1, yo, k3 tog, k to end. Complete to correspond to left front, reversing all shaping and working side incs and armhole decs in same manner as for left side of back.


Sleeves

With smaller needles, cast on 2 sts, * cast on 2 sts, pass the first over the second, rep from * 17(17-18-18-20) times, cast on 2 sts – 21(21-22-22-24) sts on needle.

Next Row: K1, (k1, yo) 18(18-19-19-21) times, k2 – 39(39-41-41-45) sts. P 1 row. Change to larger needles.

Row 1 (RS): K18(18-19-19-21), place marker, k1, yo, k2 tog, place marker, k to end.

Row 2: Purl

Row 3: K to first marker, SSK, yo, k1, k to end.

Row 4: Purl. Work in this manner, keeping center 3 sts in pat as established and remaining sts in St st. AT THE SAME TIME, inc 1 st each side in same manner as for back incs every 4th row 0(3-3-9-9) times then every 6th row 18(16-16-12-12) times, working incs in St st. Work even on 75(77-79-83-87) sts until sleeve measures 16" from beg, end on WS.

Shape Cap: Working in pat as established, bind off 4 sts at beg of the next 2 rows. Dec 1 st each side in same manner as for back armholes every RS row 19 times. Bind off 3(3-4-5-6) sts at beg of the next 2 rows, then 3(4-4-5-6) sts at beg of the next 2 rows. Bind off remaining 17 sts.


Finishing

Steam pieces lightly. Sew shoulder seams. Sew in sleeves. Sew side and sleeve seams.

Lower Edging: With RS facing, using crochet hook, beg at lower front edge of left front, join yarn and work 1 sc, ch1 in each eyelet around entire lower edge of sweater. Fasten off. Lap right front over left front and adjust to fit. Sew on buttons, using eyelets as buttonloops. Sl st lower 3" of left front edge to inside of right front to hold in place.
