Straight knitting needles, sizes 6 and 8 OR SIZE TO OBTAIN GAUGE.

4 St Holders.

2 St Markers.


Gauge

11 sts = 2"; 31 rows = 4" in St st with size 8 needles.

15 sts = 2"; 31 rows = 4" in k2, p2 ribbing with size 8 needles.

Back

With smaller needles, cast on 132(140-148-156-164) sts.

Row 1 (RS): K1, (p1, k1) 25(27-29-31-33) times, place marker, p2, (k2, p2) 7 times, place marker, (k1, p1) 25(27-29-31-33) times, k1.

Row 2: K the k sts and p the p sts as they face you. Rep these 2 rows 3 times more, then rep Row 1 once more.

Next Row (WS): P to first marker, decreasing 9 sts evenly spaced across, k2, (p2, k2) 7 times, p to end, decreasing 9 sts evenly spaced across – 114(122-130-138-146) sts. Change to larger needles. Keeping 30 sts between markers in ribbing as established and remaining sts in St st, work even until piece measures 18-1/2" from beg, end on WS.

Shape Armholes: Bind off 6 sts at beg of the next 2 rows.

Next Row (RS): K2, k2 tog, work to last 4 sts, SKP, k2. Rep this dec every RS row 4 times more – 92(100-108-116-124) sts. Work even until armholes measure 7-1/2(8-8-1/2-9-9-1/2)", end on WS.

Shape Shoulders and Neck: Bind off 7(9-11-11-13) sts, work until there are 24(26-28-32-34) sts on RH needle, join another hank of yarn and, dropping markers, bind off center 30 sts, work to end. Working both sides at once, bind off 7(9-11-11-13) sts at beg of the next row, then 8(9-10-12-13) sts at beg of the next 4 rows. AT THE SAME TIME, bind off 4 sts at each neck edge twice.


Right Front

With smaller needles, cast on 80(84-88-92-96) sts.

Row 1 (RS): K3, (p2, k2) 6 times, p2, place marker, k1, (p1, k1) 25(27-29-31-33) times.

Row 2: (P1, k1) 25(27-29-31-33) times, p1, (k2, p2) 5 times, k1. Rep these 2 rows 3 times more, then rep Row 1 once more.

Next Row (WS): Purl, decreasing 9 sts evenly spaced across to marker, (k1, p1) 7 times, k1 – 71(75-79-83-87) sts. Change to larger needles. Keeping first 29 sts in ribbing as established and remaining sts in St st, work even until piece measures 15-1/2" from beg, end on WS.

Make Slit: Work in ribbing to marker, join another hank of yarn and k to end. Work ribbing and St st sections with separate yarn for 5 more rows, forming vertical slit, end on WS.

Next Row (RS): Work in ribbing to marker, tie ends of 2 hanks tog and drop second hank, k to end. Using 1 hank of yarn, work even until piece measures 17-1/2" from beg, end on WS.

Shape Neck: Work in ribbing to marker, k2, SKP, k to end. Rep this dec every 4th row 15(13-11-9-7) times more, then every 6th row 1(3-5-7-9) times. AT THE SAME TIME, when piece measures 18-1/2" from beg, shape armhole same as for left side of back. Work even on 43(47-51-55-59) sts until armhole measures 7-1/2(8-8-1/2-9-9-1/2)", end on RS.

Shape Shoulder: At armhole edge, bind off 7(9-11-11-13) sts once, 8(9-10-12-13) sts once, then 11(12-13-15-16) sts once. Work even in ribbing on remaining 17 sts for 3". Bind off all sts.


Left Front

Work to correspond to right front, reversing placement of ribbed frontband, until piece measures 15-1/2" from beg, end on WS.

Next Row (RS): K to marker, dropping marker, sl last 29 sts onto holder. Work even on 42(46-50-54-58) sts for 5 more rows, end on WS. Sl these sts onto holder. With RS facing, sl 29 sts from first holder to needle. Join yarn and work in ribbing for 6 rows, end on WS. Return these sts to holder. Slip holder with 29 sts through slit on right front from WS to RS. With RS facing, sl sts from both holders onto same needle. Join yarn and work across all sts, replacing marker – 71(75-79-83-87) sts. Complete to correspond to right front, reversing all shaping and working neck decs on last 4 sts before marker as k2 tog, k2.


Sleeves

With smaller needles, cast on 50 sts.

Row 1 (RS): K2, * p2, k2, rep from * across.

Row 2: P2, * k2, p2, rep from * across. Rep these 2 rows for 4", inc 1 st each end of last row and end on WS - 52 sts. Change to larger needles.

Next Row (RS): K15, place marker, p2, (k2, p2) 5 times, place marker, k to end. Keeping 22 sts between markers in ribbing as established and remaining sts in St st, inc 1 st each side every other row 0(0-0-0-2) times, every 4th row 0(4-13-19-24) times, every 6th row 10(14-8-4-0) times, then every 8th row 5(0-0-0-0) times – 82(88-94-98-104) sts. Work even until sleeve measures 18" from beg, end on WS.

Shape Cap: Bind off 6 sts at beg of the next 2 rows.

Next Row (RS): K2, k2 tog, work to last 4 sts, SKP, k2. Rep this dec every other row 4 times more, end on WS. Bind off 19(22-25-27-30) sts at beg of the next 2 rows. Bind off remaining 22 sts.


Finishing

Sew shoulder seams. Sew bound-off ends of neckband tog. Sew inside edge of neckband to back neck edge firmly so neck will not stretch. Sew in sleeves. Sew side and sleeves seams.

Note: A snap may be sewn to inside of front neck edge to hold V neck tog if desired.
