Smocked Pattern (Multiple of 6 sts + 2)
Row 1 (RS): P2, * bring yarn to WS, sl 4 sts to RH needle, bring yarn to RS, sl same 4 sts back to LH needle, bring yarn to back wrapping around the 4 sts, rep from * once more, sl 4 sts back to RH needle, p2, rep from * across.
Row 2 and all WS rows: K2, * p1 TBL, k2, rep from * across.
Row 3: P2, * k1 TBL, p2, rep from * across.
Row 5: P2, k1 TBL, p2, rep from * of Row 1 to last 5 sts, end p2, k1 TBL, p2.
Row 7: Rep Row 3.
Row 8: Rep Row 2.
Rep these 8 rows for Smocked Pat.
Back
With smaller straight needles, cast on 106(118-126-138-146-158) sts.
Ribbing: Row 1 (RS): K2, * p2, k2, rep from * across.
Row 2: P2, * k2, p2, rep from * across. Rep these 2 rows until piece measures 1½” from beg, end on RS. Change to larger needles and p the next row, dec 16(18-18-20-20-22) sts across – 90(100-108-118-126-136) sts. Work even in St st until piece measures 11” from beg, end on RS.
Next Row (WS): P20(23-25-27-29-32), dec 8(7-7-5-5-6) sts across, place marker, p50(54-58-64-68-72), inc 24(26-28-28-30-32) sts across, place marker, p to end , dec 8(7-7-5-5-6) sts across – 98(112-122-136-146-156) sts.
Establish Smocked Pat: Row 1 (RS): K0(0-2-2-0-2), (p2, k2) 3(4-4-5-6-6) times, work Row 1 of Smocked Pat over 74(80-86-92-98-104) sts, (k2, p2) 3(4-4-5-6-6) times, k0(0-2-2-0-2).
Row 2: P0(0-2-2-0-2), (k2, p2) 3(4-4-5-6-6) times, work Row 2 of Smocked Pat over 74(80-86-92-98-104) sts, (p2, k2) 3(4-4-5-6-6) times, p0(0-2-2-0-2). Work even in pat as established until piece measures 15” from beg, end on WS.
Shape Armholes: Bind off 5(7-8-9-10-11) sts at beg of the next 2 rows – 88(98-106-118-126-134) sts. Dec 1 st each side every RS row 7(9-10-12-13-14) times – 74(80-86-94-100-106) sts. Keeping 0(0-0-1-1-1) st at each edge in Reverse St st, and remaining sts in Smocked Pat, work even until armholes measure 7(7½-8-8½-8½-9)”, end on WS. Bind off.
Left Front
With smaller needles, cast on 50(58-62-70-74-80) sts. Work even in ribbing same as back for 1½”, end on RS. Change to larger needles and p the next row, dec 8(10-10-14-14-14) sts across – 42(48-52-56-60-66) sts. Work even in St st until piece measures 11” from beg, end on RS.
Next Row (WS): P21(25-29-29-33-33), inc 11(13-15-15-17-17) sts across, place marker, p21(23-23-27-27-33), dec 9(7-5-5-3-7) sts across – 44(54-62-66-74-76) sts.
Establish Smocked Pat: Row 1 (RS): K0(0-2-2-0-2), (p2, k2) 3(4-4-5-6-6) times, work Row 1 of Smocked Pat over 32(38-44-44-50-50) sts.
Row 2: Work Row 2 of Smocked Pat over 32(38-44-44-50-50) sts, (p2, k2) 3(4-4-5-6-6) times, p0(0-2-2-0-2). Work even in pat as established until piece measures 15” from beg, end on WS.
Shape Armhole: Bind off 5(7-8-9-10-11) sts at beg of the next row, work to end – 39(47-54-57-64-65) sts. Dec 1 st at armhole edge every RS row 7(9-10-12-13-14) times – 32(38-44-45-51-51) sts. Keeping 0(0-0-1-1-1) st at armhole edge in Reverse St st and remaining sts in Smock Pat, work even until armhole measures 4(4½-5-5½-5½-6)”, end on RS.
Shape Neck: Bind off 3(6-8-7-9-6) sts at beg of the next row, work to end – 29(32-36-38-42-45) sts. Dec 1 st at neck edge EVERY row 12 times – 17(20-24-26-30-33) sts. Work even until armhole measures 7(7½-8-8½-8½-9)”, end on WS. Bind off.
Right Front
Work same as left front, reversing all shaping and placement of Smocked Pat and ribbing. Work armhole decs at end of RS rows. Bind off for neck on RS.
Sleeves
With smaller needles, cast on 42(42-42-46-46-46) sts. Work in ribbing same as back for 1½”, end on RS. Change to larger needles and p the next row, dec 6 sts across – 36(36-36-40-40-40) sts. Work in St st, inc 1 st each side every 1¾(1¾-1¼-1¼-1-1)” 9(9-11-11-14-16) times – 54(54-58-62-68-72) sts. Work even until sleeve measures 18” from beg, end on WS.
Shape Cap: Bind off 5(7-8-9-10-11) sts at beg of the next 2 rows, then 2 sts at beg of the next 2 rows – 40(36-38-40-44-46) sts. Dec 1 st each side every 4th row 0(5-6-7-5-6) times, then every RS row 15(5-3-1-5-3) times, end on WS. Bind off 2 sts at beg of the next 2 rows. Bind off remaining 6(12-16-20-20-24) sts.
Finishing
Left Frontband: With RS facing, using smaller needles, beg at left front neck, pick up and k106(106-110-110-110-114) sts along left front edge. Beg with Row 2, work in ribbing same as back for 1¼”, end on WS. Bind off in ribbing.
Right Frontband: Beg at lower right edge, work same as left frontband for ½”, end on WS.
Buttonhole Row (RS): Work in ribbing as established to beg of Smocked Pat, yo, k2 tog, make 2 more buttonholes in this manner evenly spaced along Smocked Pat section, working last buttonhole ½” below neck and the other evenly spaced between. Complete same as left frontband. Sew shoulder seams.
Collar: With RS facing, using smaller needles, beg at inner edge of right frontband, pick up and k89 sts around entire neck edge to inner edge of left frontband. Note: Because collar folds back, RS of work will be WS of collar.
Row 1 (WS): K2, * p1, k2, rep from * across.
Row 2: P2, * k1, p2, rep from * across. Rep these 2 rows once more, end on RS.
Inc Row (WS): K2, * p1, M1p, k2, rep from * across – 118 sts. Beg with Row 2, work in ribbing same as back until collar measures 3”, end on WS. Change to larger needles and work in ribbing as established until collar measures 6” from beg, end on WS. Bind off in ribbing. Sew in sleeves. Sew side and sleeve seams. Sew on buttons.
