Pasandra is cleverly constructed of textural geometric shapes – patchwork triangles and rectangles –that are knit in simple rib, garter and stockinette stitches.

Straight knitting needles, size 9 (5.50 mm) OR SIZE TO OBTAIN GAUGE

Note:  Each motif is made up of a different combination of sts.  If you get the correct st and row gauge in St st, your gauge on the other sts should be correct.


Note

The back of this garment is made up of 7 different motifs.  These are sewn together following the diagram.  Arrows on the diagram indicate the direction that each motif should be placed – the base of the arrow is the cast-on edge and the point is the bound-off edge.  Please label each motif as it completed for ease of assembly.


Motif #1

With straight needles, cast on 66 sts.

Row 1 (RS):  K31, k2 tog, place marker, SSK, k 31 – 64 sts.

Row 2:  P to 2 sts before marker, p2 tog, sl marker, p2 tog, p to end – 62 sts.  Continue in this manner to dec 1 st each side of marker EVERY row until 4 sts remain.  Bind off.


Motif #2 (Make 2)

With straight needles, cast on 58 sts.  Break off yarn.  Sl 28 sts to RH needle without working them.  Join yarn.

Short Rows:  Row 1:  K4, turn.

Row 2:  K6, turn.

Row 3:  K8, turn.  Continue in this manner to knit 2 more sts each row until all 58 sts have been worked.

Next Row (WS):  (P1, k1) 14 times, p1, place marker, p1, (k1, p1) 14 times.

Dec Row 1 (RS):  Work in ribbing to 2 sts before marker, k2 tog, sl marker, SSK, work in ribbing to end – 56 sts.  Continue in this manner to dec 1 st each side of marker every RS row 18 times more, end on RS – 20 sts. 

Dec Row 2 (WS):  Work in ribbing to 2 sts before marker, p2 tog, sl marker, p2 tog, work in ribbing to end – 18 sts.  Rep Dec Rows 1 and 2 three times more, then rep Dec Row 1 once more – 4 sts.  Bind off.


Motif #3

With straight needles, cast on 84 sts.

Row 1 (RS):  (K1, p1) 20 times, k2 tog, place marker, SSK, (p1, k1) 20 times – 82 sts.

Row 2 (WS):  Work in ribbing to 2 sts before marker, p2 tog, sl marker, p2 tog, work in ribbing to end – 80 sts.  Continue in this manner to dec 1 st each side of marker EVERY row until 4 sts remain.  Bind off.


Motif #4

With straight needles, cast on 58 sts.  Break off yarn.  Sl 27 sts to RH needle without working them.  Join yarn.

Row 1 (RS):  P4, turn.

Row 2 (WS):  K7, turn.

Row 3:  P10, turn.  Continue in this manner to work 3 more sts in Reverse St st every row 7 times more – 34 sts will have been worked.  Now work 2 more sts in Reverse St st every row 12 times until all 58 sts have been worked, end on RS.

Next Row (WS):  (P1, k1) 14 times, p1, place marker, p1, (k1, p1) 14 times.

Dec Row 1 (RS):  Work in ribbing to 2 sts before marker, k2 tog, sl marker, SSK, work in ribbing to end – 56 sts.  Continue in this manner to dec 1 st each side of marker every RS row 18 times more, end on RS – 20 sts.

Dec Row 2 (WS):  Work in ribbing to 2 sts before marker, p2 tog, sl marker, p2 tog, work in ribbing to end – 18 sts.  Rep Dec Rows 1 and 2 three times more, then rep Dec Row 1 once more – 4 sts.  Bind off.


Motif #5

With straight needles, cast on 58 sts.  Break off yarn.  Sl 28 sts to RH needle without working them.  Join yarn.  Work short rows same as Motif #2 until all 58 sts have been worked.

Next Row (WS):  P29, place marker, p29.

Dec Row 1 (RS):  K to 2 sts before marker, k2 tog, sl marker, SSK, k to end – 56 sts.  Continue in this manner to dec 1 st each side of marker every RS row 18 times more, end on RS – 20 sts.

Dec Row 2 (WS):  P to 2 sts before marker p2 tog, sl marker, p2 tog, p to end – 18 sts.  Rep Dec Rows 1 and 2 three times more, then rep Dec Row 1 once more – 4 sts.  Bind off.


Motif #6

With straight needles, cast on 3 sts.  Purl 1 row, knit 1 row.  Cast on 3 sts at end of every RS row 10 times – 33 sts.  Work even for 3 rows, end on WS.  Purl 1 row.  Bind off 3 sts at beg of the next WS row – 30 sts.  Dec 1 st at end of every RS row until 1 st remains.  Fasten off.


Motif #7 (Make 2)

With straight needles, cast on 4 sts.  Knit 1 row.

Row 2 (RS):  Cast on 2 sts, k to end – 6 sts.

Row 3:  Knit.  Continue to cast on 2 sts at beg of every RS row 12 times more, end on RS – 30 sts.

Next Row (WS):  * P1, k1, rep from * across. Work 3 more rows in ribbing as established, end on RS.

Dec Row 1 (WS):  P1, k2 tog, work in ribbing to end – 29 sts.  Work 3 rows even in ribbing as established.  Rep the last 4 rows 3 times more, then rep Dec Row 1 once more, end on WS – 25 sts.  Work 1 row even.  Rep Dec Row 1 every WS row 6 times – 19 sts.

Dec Row 2 (RS):  Work to 3 sts from end, p2 tog, k1 – 18 sts.  Rep Dec Rows 1 and 2 seven times more – 4 sts.  Bind off.


Lower Back

With straight needles, cast on 136 sts.

Row 1 (RS):  P66, place marker, k2, place marker, k68.

Row 2 (WS):  K to first marker, p2, k to end.  Rep these 2 rows until piece measures 3 1/2” from beg, end on WS.

Next Row (RS):  Bind off 5 sts, p to first marker, drop marker, k2, drop marker, sl remaining 68 sts onto holder for Left Side – 63 sts.

Right Side:  Next Row (WS):  Bind off 5 sts, k to end – 58 sts.  Continuing to work in Reverse St st, dec 1 st each side EVERY row 10 times, end on WS – 38 sts.  Bind off 3 sts at beg of the next 6 rows – 20 sts.  Bind off 5 sts at beg of the next 4 rows.

Left Side:   With RS facing, sl 68 sts from holder onto straight needle.  Join yarn.

Row 1 (RS):  Bind off 2 sts, k to end – 66 sts.  Working in Garter St, bind off 2 sts at beg of the next 4 RS rows, end on WS – 58 sts.

Next Row (RS):  Bind off 2 sts, k to last 2 sts, p2 – 56 sts.

Following Row (WS):  Knit.  From here, continue to work 2 more sts at the end of every RS row in Reverse St st until all sts are worked in Reverse St st.  AT THE SAME TIME, bind off 2 sts at beg of the next RS row, then bind off 3 sts at beg of the next 8 RS rows – 30 sts.  Dec 1 st at beg of every RS row 8 times – 22 sts.  Dec 1 st at beg of every RS row and at end of every WS row until 10 sts remain, end on WS.  Bind off.


Left Front

Note:  Fronts are worked from the top down.

With straight needles, cast on 60 sts.

Row 1 (RS):  K1, (p1, k1) 6 times for frontband, place marker, k47.

Row 2:  P to marker, (p1, k1) 6 times, p1.  Rep these 2 rows until piece measures 3 1/2” from beg, end on WS.

Dec Row (RS):  Work in pat as established to last 5 sts, sl 1, k2 tog, psso, k2 – 58 sts.  Rep this dec every 4th row once more, every RS row 14 times, every 4th row 7 times, end on WS – 14 sts.

Last Row (RS):  Work to last 2 sts, k2 tog – 13 sts.  Bind off in ribbing.


Right Front

Work to correspond to left front, reversing placement of frontband.  Work Dec Row as k2, K2SP, work in pat to end.  Work last dec as SSK, work to end.


Sleeves

With straight needles, cast on 46 sts.  Work even in k1, p1 ribbing for 2 rows.  Work even in St st until sleeve measures 2 1/2” from beg, end on WS.  Inc 1 st each end of next row, then every 1 1/2” 7 times more – 62 sts.  Work even until sleeve measures 19” from beg, end on WS.  Bind off.


Finishing

Sew motifs tog following diagram (make sure to have motifs facing in direction shown).  Sew lower back to bottom edge of motifs as shown.  Sew cast-on edges of fronts to motifs 1 and 3 with seams on the outside forming welted seams.  Fold piece in half so that side seams match at bottom.  Pin sleeves to edges and sew in place using welted seams.  Sew side and sleeve seams using welted seams.
