Materials

1 Ball BERROCO COMFORT (100 grs), #9724 Pumpkin

Straight knitting needles, size 9 (5.50 mm) OR SIZE TO OBTAIN GAUGE

16' Long circular knitting needle, size 9 (5.50 mm)

2 Double pointed knitting needles (dpn), size 7 (5.50 mm)

Safety pin

Tapestry needle

18 sts = 4"; 24 rows = 4" in St st

NOTE

The body of this sweater is worked in one piece from lower front edge, over shoulders, to lower back edge.

 

Body

Front:  With straight needles, cast on 28 sts.  Work even in St st for 1", end on RS.  Knit 1 row on WS for turning ridge.  Work even in St st until piece measures 4" from beg, end on WS.  Mark beg and end of last row for beg of armholes.  Work even until armholes measure 1 1/2" from beg, end on WS.

Shape Neck:  Next Row (RS):  K9, join another strand of yarn and bind off center 10 sts for front neck edge, k to end.  Working both sides at once, dec 1 st at each neck edge EVERY row 3 times.  Work even on 6 sts each side until armholes measure 2", end on WS.

Back:  Next Row (RS):  K6, cast on 16 sts for back neck, k to end - 28 sts.  Work even until piece measures 2" above last group of cast-on sts, end on WS.  Mark beg and end of last row for end of armholes.  Work even until piece measures 3" above last markers, end on RS.  Knit 1 row on WS for turning ridge.  Work even in St st until piece measures 1" above turning ridge, end on WS.  Bind off.

 

Finishing

Armbands:  With RS facing, using straight needles, pick up and k19 sts between armhole markers.  (Purl 1 row, knit 1 row) twice, end on RS.  Knit 1 row on WS for turning ridge.  (Knit 1 row, purl 1 row) twice, end on WS.  Bind off.  Sew side and armband seams.  Turn lower edge and armband edges back to WS along turning ridges and sew in place.

Hood:  With RS facing, using circular needle, cast on 3 sts, beg at center of sts bound-off for front neck edge, pick up and k41 sts around entire neck edge, then cast on 3 sts more - 47 sts. DO NOT join.  Beg with a p row, work back and forth  in St st for 5 rows, end on WS.

Inc Row (RS):  K6, (M1k, k3) 12 times, M1k, k to end - 60 sts.  Beg with a p row, work even in St st until hood measures 3" from beg, end on WS.

Divide for Earholes:  Next Row (RS):  K12, join another strand of yarn and k36. join another strand of yarn and k12.  Working all 3 sections at once with separate strands of yarn, purl 1 row.

Dec Row 1 (RS):  With first strand, k8, SSK, k2; with second strand, k2, k2 tog, (k4, k2 tog) 4 times, k4, SSK, k2; with third strand, k2, k2 tog, k to end - 11 sts each on first and third sections and 30 sts in center.  Purl 1 row.

Dec Row 2 (RS):  With first strand, k7, SSK, k2;  with second strand, k2, k2 tog, k26, SSK, k2; with third strand, k2, k2 tog, k to end - 10 sts each in first and third sections and 28 sts in center.  Purl 1 row.

Dec Row 3 (RS):  With first strand, k6, SSK, k2;  with second strand, k2, k2 tog, (k2, k2 tog) twice, k4, (k2 tog, k2) twice, SSK, k2;  with third strand, k2, k2 tog, k to end - 9 sts each in first and third sections and 22 sts in center.   Purl 2 row.

Joining Row (RS):  Knit across all sts with first strand of yarn, fastening off the other 2 strands - 40 sts.  Purl 1 row.

Dec Row 4 (RS):  K11, k2 tog, k2, k2 tog, k6, k2 tog, k2, k2 tog, k11 - 36 sts.  Purl 1 row.  Divide sts onto 2 straight needles pointed in the same direction.  Break off yarn leaving an 18" long end.  Thread end into tapestry needle and weave sts together using Kitchener St.  Fold 3 sts at each front edge to WS and sew in place forming casing for drawstring.

Drawstring:  Using dpn's, cast on 2 sts and work I-Cord as follows:

* Row 1 (RS):  K2, DO NOT turn.  Slide sts to beg of needle to work next row from RS.  Rep this row until cord measures 22: in length.  Fasten off.  Fasten safety pin through one end of cord and use pin to draw cord through casing on hood.  Knot both ends of cord.
