Straight knitting needles, sizes 9 (5.50 mm) and 10 (6.00 mm) OR SIZE TO OBTAIN GAUGE


Gauge

17 sts = 4”;  22 rows = 4” in St st with MC on larger needles

18 sts = 4”;  22 rows = 4” in St st with CC on smaller needles

Back

With larger needles, using MC, cast on 90(98-106) sts.  Work even in St st until piece measures 18(17 1/2-17)” from beg, end on WS.  Mark beg and end of last row for beg of armholes.  Work even until armholes measure 8(8 1/2-9)”, end on WS.

Shape Shoulders and Neck:  Bind off 5(7-8) sts at beg of the next 2 rows, 5(7-7) sts at beg of the next 2 rows, then 6(6-7) sts at beg of the next 6 rows.  Bind off remaining 34 sts for back neck.


Left Front

With larger needles, using MC, cast on 60(64-68) sts.  Work in St st until piece measures 18(17 1/2-17)” from beg, end on WS.  Mark end of last row for beg of armhole.  Work even until armhole measures 6(6 1/2-7)”, end on RS.

Shape Neck:  Next Row (WS):  Bind off 5 sts, p to end – 55(59-63) sts.  Bind off 6 sts at neck edge every WS row 4 times, then dec 1 st at neck edge every RS row 3 times – 28(32-36) sts.  AT THE SAME TIME, when armhole measures 8(8 1/2-9)”, end on WS.  Bind off 5(7-8) sts at armhole edge once, 5(7-7) sts once, then 6(6-7) sts 3 times for shoulder.


Right Front

With smaller needles, using CC, cast on 81(86-90) sts.  Work even in St st for 3 1/2”, end on RS.  Knit the next row for turning ridge.  Continue to work in St st until piece measures 7” from beg, end on RS.  Change to larger needles and MC and p the next row, dec 5 sts across – 76(81-85) sts.  Continue to work in St st for 2 rows, end on WS. 

Dec Row (RS):  K1, SSK, k to end – 75(80-84) sts.  Rep this dec every 4th row 13 times more, then every 6th row 7 times – 55(60-64) sts.  AT THE SAME TIME, when piece measures 21 1/2(21-20 1/2)” from beg, end on WS.  Mark beg of last row for beg of armhole.  When all decs have been completed, work even until armhole measures 6(6 1/2-7)”, end on WS.

Shape Neck:  Next Row (RS):  Bind off 4(5-5) sts, k to end – 51(55-59) sts.  Work 1 row even.  Bind off 5 sts at neck edge 4 times, then dec 1 st at neck edge every RS row 3 times – 28(32-36) sts.  AT THE SAME TIME, when armhole measures 8(8 1/2-9)”, end on RS.  Bind off 5(7-8) sts at armhole edge once, 5(7-7) sts once, then 6(6-7) sts 3 times for shoulder.


Sleeves

With smaller needles, using CC, cast on 58(63-68) sts.  Work in St st for 13”, end on RS.  Change to larger needles and MC and p the next row, dec 5(4-5) sts across – 55(59-63) sts.  Work even in St st until sleeve measures 23” from beg, end on WS.  Mark beg and end of last row for beg of cap.

Shape Cap:  Bind off 4 sts at beg of the next 6(10-14) rows, then 3 sts at beg of the next 10(6-2) rows.  Fasten off last st.


Finishing

Left Frontband:  With smaller needles, using CC, cast on 108 sts.  Work even in St st for 7”, end on WS.  Bind off.  Sew bound-off edge of frontband to left front edge.  Fold frontband in half to WS and sew cast-on edge to WS of left front edge.  Fold CC band at bottom of right front in half to WS along turning ridge and sew in place.

Right Front Edging:  With RS facing, using larger needles and MC, beg at turning ridge, pick up and k16 sts along side of CC band, working through double thickness, then pick up and k95 sts along remaining right front edge – 111 sts.  Turn and bind off knitwise.  Sew shoulder seams.

Collar:  With smaller needles, using CC, cast on 68 sts.  Work even in St st for 30”, end on WS.  Bind off.  Fold collar in half lengthwise with WS tog.  Sew all 3 edges tog.  Pin long sewn edge of collar to neck edge with one end at outer edge of left frontband and the other at right front edge gathering collar slightly if needed.  Sew in place.  Sew in sleeves matching markers.  Sew side, sleeve and cuff seams.  Fold cuffs in half to WS and sew in place.
