Straight knitting needles, sizes 7 (4.50 mm) and 9 (5.50 mm) OR SIZE TO OBTAIN GAUGE

Cable needle (cn)

Crochet hook, size 3.50 mm (E)

Small beads

Tapestry needle

Small amount of waste yarn and spare size 7 needle for cast-on


Gauge

18 sts = 4”;  26 rows = 4” in St st on smaller needles

24 sts = 4”;  28 rows = 4” in Cable Pat on larger needles

Cable Pattern (Multiple of 14 sts + 1)

Row 1 and all WS rows:  K1, * p2 tog, yo, p11, k1, rep from * across.

Row 2:  K1, * SSK yo, sl 3 sts to cn and hold in BACK, k3, k3 from cn, k6, rep from * across.

Row 4:  K1, * SSK, yo, k12, rep from * across.

Row 6:  K1, * SSK, yo, k3, sl 3 sts to cn and hold in FRONT, k3, k3 from cn, k3, rep from * across.

Row 8:  Rep Row 4.

Rep these 8 rows for Cable Pat.


Hat

With waste yarn, using smaller needles, cast on 63 sts.  Join Weekend and work even in St st for 4 rows, end on WS.  Unravel waste yarn, slipping 64 open sts onto spare needle.  Fold sts on spare needle to WS so spare needle and LH needle are parallel.

Next Row (RS):  * K1 st from LH needle, p 1 st from spare needle, rep from * across, end k1 st from LH needle – 127 sts.

Row 1 (WS):  P1, * k1, p1, rep from * across.

Row 2:  K1, * p1, k1, rep from * across.  Rep these 2 rows once more, end on RS.  Change to larger needles and work even in Cable Pat until piece measures approximately 6½” from beg, end on Row 1 of Cable Pat.

Shape Top:  Row 1 (RS):  K1, SSK, sl next 3 sts to cn and hold in BACK, k3, k3 from cn, k6, rep from * across – 118 sts.

Row 2:  * P2 tog, rep from * across – 59 sts.

Row 3:  K1, * k2 tog, rep from * across – 30 sts.

Row 4:  Rep Row 2 – 15 sts.  Break off yarn, leaving an 18” long end.  Thread end through tapestry needle and draw through all sts on needle.  Pull up tightly and secure.  Sew back seam.


Flower (Make 3)

With crochet hook, ch 3, join with a sl st to form a ring.

Rnd 1:  Ch 1, work 10 sc’s in ring, join with a sl st in beg ch-1 – 10 sc’s.

Rnd 2:  Ch 3 (counts as 1 sc and ch-2), * skip 1 sc, sc in next sc, ch 2, rep from * around, skip last sc, join with a sl st in 1st ch of beg ch-3 – 5 ch-2 spaces.

Rnd 3:  Sl st into 1st ch-2 space.  In same space, work 1 sc, 5 dc’s, 1 sc (petal made); make petal in each ch-2 space around, join with a sl st in 1st sc – 5 petals.

Rnd 4:  Ch 3, working from behind first rnd of petals, * skip petal, sc in next sc of Rnd 2, ch 3, rep from * 6 times more, join with a sl st in 1st ch of beg ch-3 – 7 ch-3 spaces.

Rnd 5:  Sl st into 1st ch-3 space.  In same space, work 1 sc, 5 dc’s, 1 sc (petal made); make petal in each ch-3 space around, join with a sl st in 1st sc – 7 petals.

Rep Rnds 4 and 5 once more.  Fasten off.  Sew small beads in center of each flower.  Sew flowers to hat as in photo.
