3(3-4) Hanks Berroco Weekend DK (100 grs), #2976 Dark Denim (MC) and 1 hank each #2926 Clothesline (A), #2923 Tomatillo (B), #2964 Curry (C) and #2971 Squash (D)

29” Length circular knitting needles, sizes 5 (3.75 mm) and 6 (4.00 mm) OR SIZE TO OBTAIN GAUGE

16” Length circular knitting needle, size 5 (3.75 mm)

PONCHO

Right Side:  With smaller 29” circular needle, using MC, cast on 177(187-199) sts.

Ribbing:  Row 1 (RS):  K1, * p1, k1, rep from * across.

Row 2:  P1, * k1, p1, rep from * across.  Rep these 2 rows until piece measures 1” from beg, end on WS, dec 1 st in center of last row – 176(186-198) sts.  Change to larger 29” circular needle and A.

Establish

Row 1 (RS):  Knit.

Row 2:  P1, k3, p to last 4 sts, k3, p1.  Working in pat as established, work 6 more rows A, 4 rows MC, 16 rows B, 4 rows MC, then 4 rows A.  Mark beg and end of last row.  Work even with MC until piece measures 12(13-14)” from beg, end on WS.

Shape Neck:  Next Row (RS):  K88(93-99) for front, join another hank of MC and work to end for back.

Following Row (WS):  With first hank, work 88(93-99); with second hank, bind off 10 sts for neck, work to end.  Working both sections at once, bind off 4 sts at neck edge once, 2 sts once, then dec 1 st at neck edge every other row 6 times – 88(93-99) sts on back and 66(71-77) sts on front.  Work even until piece measures 9½” above first group of 10 bound-off sts, end on RS.  Inc 1 st at neck edge on next row, then every other row 5 times more, cast on 2 sts at neck edge once, 4 sts once, then 10 sts once, end on WS.

Joining Row (RS):  With first hank work 88(93-99), fasten off second hank and work to end – 176(186-198) sts. 

Left Side: Work even until piece measures same as distance from markers on right side to beg of neck shaping, end on WS.  Continuing to work in pat as established, work 4 rows C, 4 rows MC, 16 rows D, 4 rows MC, then 8 rows C, end on WS.  Change to smaller 29” circular needle and MC.  Purl the next row, inc 1 st in center – 177(187-199) sts.  Beg with Row 2, work even in ribbing same as at beg for 1”, end on WS.  Bind off in ribbing.

 

Finishing

Neckband:  With RS facing, using 16” circular needle and MC, beg at left edge of neck, pick up and k84 sts across front neck edge, then 58 sts across back neck edge – 142 sts.  Mark for beg of rnd and carry marker up.  Work even in k1, p1 ribbing for 8 rnds.  Bind off in ribbing.  Measure in 4½” from cast-on edge and mark each side.  Repeat 4½” in from bound-off edge.  Fold poncho in half lengthwise and sew side edges together from cast-on and bound-off edges to markers.
