Mitten (Make 2)

With smaller needles, using A, cast on 42(24-24) sts.  Divide sts onto 3 needles and join, being careful not to twist sts.  Mark for beg of rnd and carry marker up.  Work even in k1, p1 ribbing for 3".  Change to larger needles and k the next rnd, dec 7(3-3) sts as evenly spaced around as possible - 35(21-21) sts.  Knit 5(1-1) rnd.

Thumb Gusset:  Rnd 1:  M1k, k1, M1k, place marker, k to end - 37(23-23) sts (3 sts between markers).

Rnd 2:  Knit.

Rnd 3:  M1k, k3, M1k, sl marker, k to end - 39(25-25) sts (5 sts between markers).

Rnd 4:  Knit.  Continue to inc 2 sts between markers in this manner every other rnd until there are 13(9-9) sts between markers.

Next Rnd:  Sl 13(9-9) sts of thumb onto a piece of waste yarn, remove second marker, k34(20-20).  Work even on these 34(20-20) sts until piece measures 7" from beg.  If making tipped mittens, change to B at this point for the remainder of the mitten.  If making solid mitten, continue with A.  Work even until piece measures 8½" (or 1½" less than desired length) from beg.

Next Rnd:  K17(10-10), place marker, k to end.

Shape Top:  Dec Rnd 1:  K1, k2 tog, k to 3 sts before next marker SSK, k1, sl marker, k1, k2 tog, k to 3 sts before last marker, SSK, k1 - 30(16-16) sts.  Knit 1 rnd.  Rep these 2 rnds twice more - 22(8-8) sts.  Sl 11(4-4) sts to one dpn and 11(4-4) sts to another.  Break off yarn leaving an 18" long end.  Thread end into tapestry needle and, holding needles parallel, one in front of the other, weave sts together using Kitchener St.

Finishing

Thumb:  Sl 13(9-9) sts from waste yarn to 3 dpns, dividing sts as evenly as possible.  Mark for beg of rnd and carry marker up.  Join A and work even for 2½".

Dec Rnd:  K1, (k2 tog) 6(4-4) times - 7(5-5) sts.  Break off yarn leaving an 8" long end.  Thread end into tapestry needle and draw end through all sts on needles.  Pull up tightly and secure.  Fasten off.
