A marriage of the coat and the shrug is translated with ingenious concentric ribbed circles in our Ultra® Alpaca yarn. When you put your arms through the sleeves and slip it on like a shrug, you are enveloped in a long and luxurious undulating ribbed knit cover-up.

Note

The lower section of this garment is worked sideways in one piece and seamed at center back.  Sleeves are worked sideways, seamed at center then sewn to lower section.  There is no opening for neck – you slip your arms into the sleeves with the entire piece behind your back.  Front edges of garment are not intended to meet (see photo).

Lower Section

Note:  The lower section is shaped using short rows. When working these rows, you will work across a given number of sts then turn and work back leaving some sts unworked.  This makes one edge longer than the other.

With circular needle, cast on 146 sts. Do not join.

Establish Ribbing:  ** Row 1 (RS): K2, * p2, k2; rep from * across.

Row 2: P2, * k2, p2; rep from * across.

Rep these 2 rows 17 times more, end on WS (36 rows total).

Short Rows:  Next Row (RS): Work in ribbing over 142 sts. Turn, leaving 4 sts unworked on LH needle.

Next Row (WS): Work in ribbing as established.

Next Row (RS): Work in ribbing over 138 sts. Turn, leaving 8 sts unworked on LH needle.

Next Row (WS): Work in ribbing as established.  Continue to work in this manner, working 4 sts less on each RS row until 14 sts remain on RH needle, end on WS.  **  Rep from ** to ** 7 times more, then work in ribbing on all 146 sts for 6 rows more. Bind off ribbing.

Left Sleeve

With straight needles, cast on 62 sts.  Work in ribbing same as lower section for 1”, end on WS. Continue to work in ribbing, inc 1 st each end of next row, then every 1 1/4” 13 times more, working incs into ribbing as sts become available – 90 sts.  Work even until sleeve measures 18” from beg, end on WS.  Mark beg and end of last row.

Shape Cap: Next Row (RS): Bind off 2 sts, work to end - 88 sts.  Work 1 row even.  Dec 1 st at beg of every RS row 25 times – 63 sts.  Work even in ribbing as established until sleeve measures 28 1/2” from beg, end on WS.  Bind off in ribbing.

Right Sleeve

Work to correspond to left sleeve, reversing shaping.  Bind off for cap and work decs at beg of WS rows.

Finishing

Sew bound-off edges of sleeves tog.  Sew bound-off and cast-on edges of lower section tog.  Note:  Wider edge of lower section is bottom of garment.  Fold lower section in half widthwise with the seam on your right.  Mark fold on your left.  Sew sleeve seams tog from cast-on edges to markers.  Pin shaped edges of sleeve caps to upper edge of lower section matching center seams in back.  Match the other center seam of sleeve caps to marker on front of lower section.  Sew in place.
