Knit in either Mica™ or Inca® Gold, Egret is a cardigan for all seasons, defined by a feminine flounce extending from the neck line and cascading across to the side seam.

Back

With smaller straight needles, cast on 116(126-138-148-158-168) sts.  Knit 4 rows .  Change to larger straight needles and work even in St st for 2(2-4-4-6-6) rows.

Dec Row (RS):  K3, k2 tog, work to last 5 sts, SSK, k3 – 114(124-136-146-156-166) sts.  Rep this dec every  6th row, 15 times more – 84(94-106-116-126-136) sts.  Work even until piece measures 14(14-14½-14½-15-15)” from beg, end on WS.

Shape Armholes:  Bind off 3(3-4-5-5-6) sts at beg of the next 2 rows, then 2(2-3-4-4-5) sts at beg of the next 2 rows – 74(84-92-98-108-114) sts.

Dec Row (RS):  K3, k2 tog, k to last 5 sts, SSK, k3.  Rep this dec every RS row 4(7-8-9-11-11) times more – 64(68-74-78-84-90) sts.  Work even until armholes measure 7½(8-8-8½-8½-9)”, end on WS.  Mark center 16 sts on last row.

Shape Shoulders and Neck:  Next Row (RS):  Bind off 4(6-7-7-8-9) sts, k to marker, join another hank of yarn and bind off center 16 sts, k to end.  Working both sides at once, bind off 4(6-7-7-8-9) sts at beg of the next row, then 5(5-6-7-8-9) sts at beg of the next 4 rows.  AT THE SAME TIME, bind off 5 sts at each neck edge twice.


Left Front

With smaller straight needles, cast on 58(63-69-74-79-84).  Knit 4 rows .  Change to larger straight needles and work even in St st for 2(2-4-4-6-6) rows, end on WS.

Dec Row (RS):  K3, k2 tog, k to end.  Rep this dec every  6th row, 15 times more – 42(47-53-58-63-68) sts.  Work even until piece measures 14(14-14½-14½-15-15)” from beg, end on WS.

Shape Armholes and Neck:  Bind off 3(3-4-5-5-6) sts at armhole edge once, then 2(2-3-4-4-5) sts once.  AT THE SAME TIME, bind off 3 sts at neck edge once, then 2 sts once, end on WS – 32(37-41-44-49-52) sts.

Dec Row (RS):  K3, k2 tog, k to last 5 sts, SSK, k3 – 30(35-39-42-47-50) sts.  Working decs in this manner (k3, k2 tog for armhole decs and SSK, k3 for neck decs), continue to dec 1 st at armhole edge every RS row 4(7-8-9-11-11) times more.  AT THE SAME TIME, dec 1 st at neck edge every 4th row 12 times more.  When all decs have been completed, work even on 14(16-19-21-24-27) sts until armhole measures 7½(8-8-8½-8½-9)”, end on WS.  Bind off 4(6-7-7-8-9) sts at armhole edge once, then 5(5-6-7-8-9) sts twice for shoulder.


Right Front

Work to correspond to left front, reversing all shaping.  Work side decs at end of RS rows as SSK, k3.  Bind off for neck on RS rows and for armhole on WS rows.  Work neck decs at beg of RS rows as k3, k2 tog.  Work armhole decs at end of RS rows as SSK, k3.  Bind off for shoulder on WS rows.


Sleeves

With smaller straight needles, cast on 52(58-64-68-74-78) sts.  Knit 4 rows. Change to larger straight needles and work even in St st for 2 rows, end on WS.

Inc Row (RS):  K3, M1, work to last 3 sts, M1, k3 – 54(60-66-70-76-80) sts.  Rep this inc every  6th row, 4 times more – 62(68-74-78-84-88) sts.  Work even until piece measures 6” from beg, end on WS.

Shape Cap: Bind off 3(3-4-5-5-6) sts at beg of the next 2 rows, then 2(2-3-4-4-5) sts at beg of the next 2 rows – 52(58-60-60-66-66) sts.

Dec Row (RS):  K3, k2 tog, k to last 5 sts, SSK, k3 – 50(56-58-58-64-64) sts.  Rep this dec every RS row 14 times more, end on WS – 22(28-30-30-36-36) sts. Bind off 2(3-4-2-4-2) sts at beg of the next 2 rows, then 2(2-2-1-2-2) sts at beg of the next 2 rows.  Bind off remaining 14(18-18-24-24-28) sts.


Finishing

Left Front Edging: With RS facing, using smaller straight needles, beg at neck edge, pick up and k74(74-76-76-78-78) sts along straight edge of left front.  Knit 4 rows, then bind off knitwise on WS.

Right Front Edging: Beg at lower edge, work same as left front edging.  Sew Shoulder seams.

Ruffle: Using larger circular needle, cast on 54(58-62-66-70-74) sts; then, using same yarn, with RS of sweater facing you, pick up 44(48-48-52-52-56) sts along right neck edge and 36 sts along back neck edge – 134(142-146-154-158-166) sts.  Beg with a k row, work 2 rows even in St st (your first row is a RS row as the ruffle will fold downward). 

Inc Row 1 (RS):  * K4, M1k, rep from * to last 2 sts, end k2 – 167(177-182-192-197-207) sts. Work even for 7 rows, end on WS.

Inc Row 2 (RS):  * K5, M1k, rep from * to last 2 sts, end k2 – 200(212-218-230-236-248) sts. Work even for 7 rows, end on WS.

Inc Row 3 (RS):  * K6, M1k, rep from * to last 2 sts, end k2 – 233(247-254-268-275-289) sts. Work even for 7 rows, end on WS.

Inc Row 4 (RS):  * K7, M1k, rep from * to last 2 sts, end k2 – 266(282-290-306-314-330) sts. Work even for 7 rows, end on WS.

Inc Row 5 (RS):  * K8, M1k, rep from * to last 2 sts, end k2 – 299(317-326-344-353-371) sts. Work even in St st for 6 rows.  Knit 2 rows, then bind off in knitwise on WS.

Note:When picking up sts along right front neck edge and back neck edge, you will be working through double thickness of sweater and ruffle.

Neck Edging:  With RS facing, using smaller circular needle, beg at beginning of cast-on edge of ruffle, pick up and k54(58-62-66-70-74) sts along ruffle to beg of right neck, 44(48-48-52-52-56) sts along right neck edge to shoulder seam, 36 sts along across back neck edge, then 44(48-48-52-52-56) sts along left front neck edge to left front edging – 178(190-194-206-210-222) sts. Knit 1 row.

Buttonhole Row (RS): K4(5-3-4-5-3), * bind off 2 sts, k until there are 14(15-17-18-19-21) sts on RH needle after bound-off sts, rep from * 3 times more, k to end (4 buttonholes made). 

Following Row:  Knit, casting on 2 sts over each pair of sts bound off on previous row. Knit 2 rows. Bind off knitwise on WS.  Sew in sleeves.  Sew side and sleeve seams.  Lay garment flat with front edges tog.  Drape free end of ruffle across left front towards side seam in an arc as shown in photo.  Mark placement of 4 buttons on left front under buttonholes.  Sew on buttons.
