There are many knit stitch patterns that translate easily into a similar crochet version. This week, we have chosen to explore the Chevron Stitch, which is knit, and its crocheted counterpart, called the Bodkin Stitch. We decided to make cozy scarves and blankets that were light and airy. We chose to use contrasting shades of Air™ to create stripe patterns. Baltic (crocheted) and Caribbean (knit) are wonderfully easy scarves. Antarctic (crocheted) and Arctic (knit) are sized to throws. Worked on a large hook or needle, these items work up quickly and may be the perfect gift for those special folks on your holiday list.
Air is a great wooly yarn that is ultra light and soft. Spun in Italy using a patented process, the woolen fiber is injected through a hosiery nylon casing, creating a soft, fuzzy look much like a felted finish but with the stretch and drape of non-felted yarns. Because the yarn has an airy fullness, it insulates to keep you warm and cozy without the weight of traditional woolen spun yarns.

Sarah Frances from Biloxi wrote to ask: "I see that on your ball of yarn you list a recommended knitting needle size. I am a crocheter. Is there a way of determining the corresponding hook for the same yarn?"
Yes, Sarah, you can determine hook size by using the metric sizing of the knitting needle and crochet hook. For example, a 6mm needle (US 10) is equivalent to a 6mm hook (US J/10)
Of course, you should know that gauge is equally as important to fit in crocheted garments as it is in knitted garments. Therefore, you must crochet a good size gauge swatch that is at least 4 inch square. As in knitting you can adjust your needle size to correct your gauge if needed.
All the best,
Margery Winter Creative Director
