1. Use a thinner yarn to sew seams
Check your yarn stash to find a smooth, thin yarn in a matching color and use it instead of the thick yarn when sewing the seams. This will drastically reduce the size of the seam, and threading your yarn needle will be a lot easier. Above, I've chosen a dark brown shade of Vintage® to go with my knitted swatch in Berroco Soufflé™.

2. Work side seams half a stitch in
When working mattress stitch (check out our how-to video for a refresher),
try inserting your needle half a stitch in, instead of one whole stitch. You'll still get a nice invisible join, but with half the bulk on the inside.

3. Pick up stitches very close to the edge
If you need to pick up stitches (watch this how-to video to learn how), make sure
to stay very close to the fabric's edge while doing so. The pick ups will still look clean and even, and you'll have less extra fabric on the back.
Keep these tricks in mind when you use big yarns, and you'll have a comfortable garment that looks as good on the inside as it does on the outside. |
