Dear Knitters,
This morning I woke up to several inches of snow so I decided
to cut out my commute to work in interest of saving time and stress.
My round trip from Providence to Uxbridge would amount to one
and a half hours. With an April photography date fast approaching,
I've got so much knitting and so little time. So, I have made
the obvious decision to stay home. There's a roaring fire in the
wood stove as I sit down to write this KnitBits on my iMac. When
I am done, I will pick up one of my many "on the needles"
projects for next fall and pop a favorite movie in my VCR. This
is the life!.
This week we have added new
Spring yarn combos to Scarf Central. The first three knitted swatches
are knit with combinations of yarns that will make gorgeous warm
weather scarves.
New Scarf Central swatches 1,
2 and 3.
And while you are there, take a look at our many other scarf combinations
on Scarf Central.
KnitBits subscribers are invited to email their favorite Berroco
scarf yarn combinations to info@berroco.com.
We would love to know which yarns you are combining.
This week our Web Exclusive
Free Pattern is Nina, a little
tank top in Echo.
We knit it in Dungaree Blue.
This cottony ribbon feels like a soft and comfy T-shirt. It knits
the kind of cool and light fabric that you love to wear on a hot
summer day. Click below and download
the pattern for this cute little top in Echo. For a look at
other summer tops knit in Echo, click
here.
Echo has a stonewashed, ombre striped look that comes and goes.
At times it may form patterns. These patterns are unique to the
individual balls of yarn, number of stitches, etcetera. You will
see an irregular, somewhat random pattern unfold before your eyes
as you knit. For example, in Sally,
you can see an irregular argyle effect.
In Karolina, the patterning
changes when you work with separate balls of yarn either side
of the neck opening. I really enjoy knitting with Echo and watching
the patterning happen. I think you will, too.
BEGINNER'S Q & A
^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^
Amy from Ashland, Oregon asked the following question:
"How can I keep my ribbon yarn from twisting while I am knitting?"
Amy, this is a frequently
asked question. That fact is that all yarns, flat or round, twist
when drawn off a ball. Because ribbon yarns are flat, the twisting
can have a more obvious effect on the knitted stitches than it
does with round yarns. Sometimes, if the ribbon is wide, it will
fold in half while it twists. My advice is to simply keep knitting
and ignore the twisting or folding. When you are finished with
the knitted pieces, block them with a pressing cloth and a steam
iron. A "shot of steam" iron works well. This will even
out the stitches and make a uniform fabric.

Congratulations to Jane of West Chester, IA for winning the Free
Sweater Kit for KnitBits#58. Her sweater choice is Solange,
from #223 Multiple Choice.
In my next KnitBits, we will post a free pattern for a scarf version
of a favorite throw, Pastiche
from book #225.
We will also show an assortment of beautiful swatches done in
other color combinations.
Till next time, keep knitting.
All the best,
