Approximately 16” around x 8 1/2” high after folding back (Not including pompon)

MATERIALS

Straight knitting needles, size 11 OR SIZE TO OBTAIN GAUGE

Tapestry needle

GAUGE

15 sts = 4”;  17 rows = 4” in k3, p3 ribbing on size 11 needles

TO SAVE TIME, TAKE TIME TO CHECK GAUGE

HAT

With straight needles, cast on 61 sts.

Row 1 (RS):  K1, * p1, k1, rep from * across.

Row 2:  P1, * k1, p1, rep from * across.  Rep these 2 rows until piece measures 3” from beg, end on WS, dec 1 st at end of last row – 60 sts.  Work even in k3, p3 ribbing until piece measures 9 1/2” from beg, end on WS.

Shape Top:  Dec Row 1 (RS): * K3, p1, p2 tog, rep from * across – 50 sts.  Work 1 row even.

Dec Row 2 (RS):  * K3, p2 tog, rep from * across – 40 sts.  Work 1 row even.

Dec Row 3 (RS):  * K2, SSK, rep from * across – 30 sts.  Work 1 row even.

Dec Row 4 (RS):  * K1, SSK, rep from * across – 20 sts.  Break off yarn leaving an end for sewing.  Thread end into tapestry needle and draw through all sts on needle.  Pull up tightly and secure, then sew back seam reversing seam over last 3” for foldback.  Make a 4” pompon and sew to top of hat.
