SIZES
Directions are for children’s size 2.
Changes for sizes 4, 6, 8, 10 and 12 are in parentheses.

FINISHED MEASUREMENTS
Chest – 28(30-32-34-35-36)".
Length – 16 3/4(17 1/2-18 1/2-19 1/2-20 1/4-21)".

MATERIALS
BERROCO COTTON TWIST (50 grs), 2(3-3-3-4-4) hanks each #8311 True Red (MC) and #8301 Bleach White (A) and 2(2-2-3-3-4) hanks #8325 Navy Blue (B).
Straight knitting needles, sizes 6 and 8 OR SIZE TO OBTAIN GAUGE.
16" length circular knitting needle, size 6.
1 St Marker.

GAUGE
19 sts = 4"; 26 rows = 4" in St st on size 8 needles.
TO SAVE TIME, TAKE TIME TO CHECK GAUGE.

NOTE 1
When working star design following chart, cut strands of Color A in lengths of 30-40". Use a separate strand of A for each star. Where Color B must be carried across more than 3 sts, twist yarn to avoid long loops.

NOTE 2
When changing colors, always hold color to the left and pick up new color from underneath. This twists yarn so there are no holes.

NOTE 3
MC and Color A may be carried loosely up side of work when not in use, being careful not to leave long loops.

NOTE 4
If desired, the sections worked following chart may be worked in solid color B. The stars may then be added using duplicate st embroidery using chart for placement.

STRIPE PATTERN (Repeat of 12 rows)
Working in St st, * work 6 rows Color A, 6 rows MC. Rep from * for Stripe Pat.

BACK
With smaller straight needles, using MC, cast on 67(71-77-81-83-85) sts.
Row 1 (RS): K1, * p1, k1, rep from * across.
Row 2: P1, * k1, p1, rep from * across. Rep these 2 rows until piece measures 1 1/2" from beg, end on WS. K 1 row for Garter Ridge. Change to larger needles and work even in St st, following Stripe Pat until piece measures 11(11 1/2-12-12 1/2-13-13 1/2)" from beg, end on WS. Mark beg and end of last row for beg of armholes. Work even in Stripe Pat until armholes measure5 1/4(5 1/2-6-6 1/2-6 3/4-7)", end on WS.
Shape Shoulders and Neck: Next Row (RS): K22(24-27-28-29-29), join another hank of yarn and bind off center 23(23-23-25-25-27) sts, k to end. Working both sides at once, bind off 3 sts at each neck edge once, end on WS. Bind off 19(21-24-25-26-26) sts each side for shoulders.

FRONT
Work same as for back until 16 rows of Stripe Pat have been completed (4 stripes), end on WS – 67(71-77-81-83-85) sts. Note: Please check directions for working chart.
Establish Chart: Row 1 (RS): With MC, k14(16-19-20-21-22), place marker, work Row 1 of chart across last 53(55-58-61-62-63) sts.
Row 2: Work Row 2 of chart to marker, work to end in Stripe Pat. Work even in pat as established until piece measures 11(11 1/2-12-12 1/2-13-13 1/2)", end on same row of Stripe Pat as for back. Mark beg and end of last row for beg of armholes. Work even until armholes measure 3 3/4(4-4 1/2-5-5 1/4-5 1/2)", end on WS.
Shape Neck: K25(27-30-31-32-32), join another hank of yarn and bind off center 17(17-17-19-19-21) sts, k to end. Working both sides at once, bind off 3 sts at each neck edge once, then dec 1 st at each neck edge every RS row 3 times. When armholes measure 5 3/4(6-6 1/2-7-7 1/4-7 1/2)", end on same row as for back. Bind off 19(21-24-25-26-26) sts each side for shoulders.

RIGHT SLEEVE
With smaller straight needles, using MC, cast on 31(33-33-35-37-37) sts. Work in ribbing same as for back for 1 1/2", end on WS. K 1 row for Garter Ridge. Change to larger needles and B. Work in St st, following chart. Inc 1 st each side every other RS row 8(5-9-12-8-5) times, then every 6th row 4(7-5-4-8-12) times – 55(57-61-67-69-71) sts. Work even until sleeve measures 11(12-12 1/2-13 1/2-14 3/4-16 1/2)" from beg, end on WS. Bind off all sts.

LEFT SLEEVE
Work same as for right sleeve until ribbing has been completed. Change to larger needles and work in St st, following Stripe Pat. Work incs at each side same as for right sleeve – 55(57-61-67-69-71) sts. When sleeve measures 11(12-12 1/2-13 1/2-14 3/4-16 1/2)" from beg, end on WS. Bind off all sts.

FINISHING
Steam pieces lightly. Sew shoulder seams.
Neckband: With RS facing, using circular needle and MC, beg at center back neck, pick up and k15(15-15-16-16-17) sts to left shoulder seam, 9 sts along left front neck edge, 17(17-17-19-19-21) sts across front neck edge, 9 sts along right front neck edge, then 14(14-14-15-15-16) sts across remaining back neck edge – 64(64-64-68-68-72) sts. Mark for beg of rnd and carry marker up. Purl 1 rnd for Garter Ridge, then work even in k1, p1 ribbing for 1". Bind off all sts loosely in ribbing. Sew in sleeves between markers. Sew side and sleeve seams, matching Stripes where possible.

DIRECTIONS FOR CHART

FRONT
For size 2: Beg at B, work to G, rep between D and G, then work to H.
For size 4: Beg at A, work to G, rep between D and G, then work to I.
For size 6: Beg at D, work to G, rep between D and G, then work from D to E.
For size 8: Beg at C, work to G, rep between D and G, then work from D to F.
For size 10: Beg at B, work to G, rep between D and G, then work from D to F.
For size 12: Beg at A, work to G, rep between D and G, then work from D to F.

RIGHT SLEEVE
For ALL sizes: Center chart using st marked with * as center point.

HOW TO WORK CHART
Beg with Row 1, work through Row 26, then rep Rows 3-26 to end.
Odd-numbered rows are RS rows and are worked from right to left. Even-numbered rows are WS rows and are worked from left to right.
